I was offered Digital Media this morning, but, having stupidly not banked on being offered it, I hadn't realized that computer science would need to be taken as a first year subject.

I have met the grade requirements for the maths, but, I'm not a figures person at all....

I'm scared to accept this course purely because I know how much I'll hate the computer science.

Is it as bad as I think...?

How bad do you think it is?

The computer science modules in first year aren't maths maths maths (that's what maths is for...). They're intro to programming, computer systems (general computer stuff, binary, general knowledge type stuff) and computer science (not maths).

I just presume that I'd need more of a 'numbers' mind to do well  The term 'computer science' sends off alarms bells in my head... :-/

Some of the programming problems might be a little bit mathesy (like counting),

by in large its nothing too taxing... also if Computer Science sets off alarm bells, why did you pick a course in "Digital Media"? Did you think it would be a course in using ms paint?

Hey Im doing Digital Media too :) If you hate the Computer science part by the end of first year, you can carry on studying your other arts subject as part of a Major/Minor degree thing :)

Im sure the Comp Science stuff wont be too bad for 1st year anyway coz we'll be newbies :P

Guys, computer science in first year is not bad at all and after leaving cert maths, it is actually a big step step down.

    First Year

    - Introduction to Media Studies
    - Introduction to Computer Science
    - Digital Video Production
    - Introduction to Computer Systems
    - Introduction to Programming
    - Sound and Video Editing
    - Discrete Structures

Intro to computer science is pretty easy, just a general introduction course, nothing too heavy at all. You will find that intro to comp science, comp systems and intro to programming overlap a lot of times so it's very hard to get lost in it. Plus first year courses are designed to give you an easy time to learn the basics so don't stress about it.

Now discrete structures is the maths module, I am absolutely sh** at maths and I did not like this module but I passed. You are always gonna get one module you do not like, but that's life. Just pass it and move on.

You will probably find that the computer science subjects are much easier then other digital media subjects.

One absolute essential tip you should remember!!!!
Do the continuous assessment tests/assignments/lab work, you can usually pick up 40% throughout the semester and if you get a good mark, the exam at the end will be a lot less stressful.
