This just came back to me...

Did anyone else hear Tom McGurk saying something about a certain group of players who don't make the squad being kept on NZ time over here so they're ready to go if called up as replacements?

Sounds bananas, does anyone have any info?

Yeah I heard him say that.

I reckon it makes sense. If you have to call someone out at short notice you don't want to lose time with them getting over jetlag or getting used to the huge time difference.

    It was Tom McGurk.
He often says stuff that isn't true as some sort of silly metaphor for other stuff. Usually while someone else would have been speaking, only for him just having cut them off.

Its most likely a metaphor for "there will be a few players at home waiting incase there is an injury".

If the provinces didn't have games on this could have happened. We've seen it before on Lions tours and previous World Cups but there was no club games on at the same time. I'd imagine any players not needed for Ireland will definitly be needed for their province.

agreed, that and I would also prefer to have players match fit then on NZ time as chances are that any replacement won't go into a starting position immediately

    True.

When I think about it now it seems nonsensical to completely mess up the training and game time of 6 or 7 players who would definitely be playing with their province just on the off chance that they are needed in NZ

Pity, it'd be amusing to watch Fitzgerald coming off the bench at a Friday evening Leinster game, pulling off his dressing gown and rubbing the sleep from his eyes as he finishes his morning coffee. Or John Hayes scrumming down at a Saturday lunchtime game, blind drunk after finishing his day's work at 6am and going for a few post-work pints.

Either way, it's not going to matter much. The Irish Team is a bit top heavy with has beens, the world cup is about to catch up big time with them. When i see what is written in the so called media about Ireland having a chance at winning the World Cup, it really makes me laugh. Where are these guys minds? Probably trying to convince their respective editors to send them on the session, oh sorry, on the trip.;)

I think Jonah Lomu tipped us as a good outside bet.

Pretty sure he said that while in Ireland when he was there to sell something or other (maybe advertisement for his upcoming game?).
