    windows XP

    Hi all,

I tried to copy a pic from a word document onto my desktop thinking it would end up as a jpeg. It didn't. However the background inside each of the name boxes of the items on desktop have changed to black. How can I changed them back

Have looked at desktop properties, no joy, it says everything normal.
I don't want to do a system restore at this stage. I'm sure theres a 2 click solution if someone could please advise I would be most gratefull.

    Thank you.

Did you try to right click any free space on your desktop and select "refresh"? Do you mean the file names on your desktop have all turned to black?

Hi, Yes have tried 'refresh' and no joy.
Every name of each desktop item now appears as white text on a black background. Incidently just for further clarification the overal theme/backround of desktop has not changed.

Right-click (My) Computer and click Properties/Advanced Settings/Performance Settings . Under Visual Effects tab all boxes should be checked by default - if something in there is unchecked that's probably where the problem lies .

Had a look at that. All are unchecked except last two. Plus 'custom' option is pre selected above. Before I do that can I just ask if copying and pasting a jpeg/scap onto the desktop would actually have changed all those settings:confused:

Is it a .gif or .png file it saved as? Sometimes the transparent/alpha channels turn black in image programs

Hi Nick it may well have been a .png file as picture originally came from the net. Remember its all the icon name boxes that are affected.

Right-click on the desktop and click Properties. Select Customize desktop on the Desktop tab, then select the Web tab on the desktop items window and deselect any web pages that are shown.

    That's from a thread here

Thank you Nessyguin. Pefect. job done.
Although I could have lived with it. its amzing how uncomfortable it was on the eye looking at those names with a very stark black background.

And thank you to all others that responded I appreciated it.
