So ive been thinking of buying a auld banger to get me around, when i go to college and don't want to spend a fortune on petrol so im looking for a diesel car. Im confused about how much tax im gonna have to pay. I went on motortax.ie and im not sure if my cars tax will be based on the engine size or the cars CO2 emissions. Can anyone clarify just how much i'll have to pay on this vehicle http://www.beepbeep.ie/used-cars/car-details.html?car=58765_1355919

Im not sure if the price of the tax quoited on this site is for a bussiness owner or for a private owner i imputted the registration on motortax.ie and it came back at around 290 or there abouts, then i done the same with this car http://www.carsireland.ie/detail.php?ad_id=658073&r=s.php%3Fe%3D2000%26f%3D2%26g%3D0 and the the tax came back at around 600ish im really confused about this any help ye can give would be much appreciated.

It'll be based on engine size.

Its not only on engine size in this case. The first one is a commercial vehicle and the second is a private vehicle thats why the first one is much cheaper even thought the engine sizes are similar.

They'll both be around the €600 mark. The OP isn't a business or commercial user so will have to pay private Motor tax on the van.

Get the car and put the saving into motor tax and diesel.
