Starting next weekend we have the 2011 World Athleitcs Championships from Daegu in South Korea. I find Athletics is a great market to bet because the canny gambler can find value as it's not very well researched by the bookies leading to instances of great odds for the punters. Here is the thread for tips for tips in the 2011 World Athletics Championships.

My tip of the championships is Yohan Blake, 16/1 with Blue Sq. This is an absolutely ridiculous price I have to say for a man who is the third favourite in this race. Gay has pulled out yet they still have a price for him. Blake is in great form and looked impressive in winning in London after running a 9.95 into a -1'6 headwind.

Bolt hasn't been great lately and Powell has never produced and I think Blake can run a new personal best and get in or around 9.77 which could very well win this race. Boylesports have Blake at 9/1 and that is the next best quote which shows how ridiculous the 16/1 with Blue Square is. For the layers, I reckon you could lay Blake at maybe 2/1 or better before the race.

I think you're looking at the market for next year's olympics??

Looks like I was. Thanks to easy odds for making me look like a fool.

Nevertheless I still think that 9/1 offered in Boyles is a great price. Blake should be a 3/1 shot in my eyes.

What price do you make Bolt and Powell in this case?

I would have Bolt at 8/13, Powell in and around 5/2 and Blake at between 3 and 4 to 1. Bolt this season has not been impressive. Now he could quite concievably run another one of his mega races but I don't think he will.

Interesting. I'm not sure if it will hit as big as 8/13 but i do think Betfair punters will be laying Bolt when that market goes up and gets liquidity. We will see him above 1/2 on the exchanges before the start I think. Very little championship class anywhere else though. One of those events that the first round will tell us everything about Bolt. He was a complete lock after the first round heat in Beijing and we may get an equally strong opinion on him one way or another in Korea. I'm 'no bet' on the 100 at this point.

    Powell is out.

Great for your bet depending on what company you had it with.

I went with Boylesports so got him at 9's. Looking like a great bet now. Have 20 each way on him.

Check out what rules they will be applying. Boyles have (or had anyway) a couple of different athletics rules quoted on their site. One of them was that in the event of any withdrawal before the start, all bets are void and a new market will be formed.

Good picking, pity I'm only after seeing this thread now. I wouldn't have had the balls to back against Bolt anyway. I had a few bob on Sogelau Tuvalu....

I didn't, but it was the first thing I asked when somebody told me about Bolt being DQed. Congrats.

well done to op and everyone who got on Blake...

Backed James to win 400metres at 5/2 on Saturday. He has just won his heat with ease..he should be top 2 so here to hoping he gets first.

Will have a tenner on Robles @6/4 in the hurdles final at 1pm. I've always liked this guy, a real classy hurdler on his day. I'm also putting a couple of euro each way on David Oliver @22/1 with the first 2 places being paid as a back-up

Edit: Just seen there, Oliver is only 12/1 with boyles...

I got paid out after the race and withdraw almost immediately. There wasn't an appeal until 15/20 mins after the race so pp must have been none the wiser. I'm sure they would have paid out anyways but didn't want to test their 'good will' policy as I've seen in the football tips thread.

LeShawn Merrit looks nailed onto to win the 400m tomorrow pairing a false start or injury. 1/2 with Boyles. Hardly going to make big money at this price but money is money.

Happy with that..I taught he was gone after 250 but came strong in last 50 metres to nick it..

My limited input, someone with more knowledge might be able to have an input.

Mens Shot Putt- Adam Nelson 13/1 with PaddyPower.

I wouldn't have too much knowledge, but athletics coach friend reckons he is way over priced. "6/1 would be too big a price for this fella". He is 9/1 with another bookie.

I won't be going mad, maybe a score on him, but just wanted to pass on the info. As i said, i only got this advice from a friend, who is an athletic coach, don't kill me if he comes last. There is no clear favourite, 4 lads all around 3/1, so it is an open enough contest. Starts friday morning at 2.

Nelson is through to the final anyway, qualified as one of the longest losers. Not holding out too much hope now though. 10 lads qualified ahead of him. Will hold out hope that he saved his big throw for the final.
