Volvo S40 1.9 Diesel

Went to view a 2002 volvo s40 1.9 diesel recently and am just wondering if any of the faults on show are common to these makes? Removed oil filler cap from engine while idling and and there was a strong blow of oily smoke coming from it. Also there was a lot of oil deposited around the turbo and inlet manifold. The seller spewed some b.s about all direct injection engines blow a bit.....very skeptical so left it after us. Owner said 3 previous owners but carcheck.ie revealed 7. Was very suspicious about the odometer reading of 102,000 miles. Is this common for these engines or was the car perhaps of higher milage/poorly maintained. Anybody else ever come across the problem/ are these a good secondhand buy?

These engines leak oil from every nut and cranny. The gearbox is the same. The gear linkages in these can wear down and can make it difficult to select gear but I'd say its cheap to resolve. From the B/S your man is talking I'd walk away. What is your budget maybe we can point you to something better.

I'd rather have a 626 diesel like this:

Same engine as in the 323 but has a bit more comfort and space.

    The diesels are Mazda engines.
