Was wondering what is exactly the procedure for registration week for First years? Does this all take place during Orientation week? Do you get your student card and all that kind of thing? What else do you have to do?

Also, how do the modules work exactly.. is there somewhere that explains them fully? What kind of modules can you pick for Arts Omnibus let's say? I'm doing English and History, any ones in particular that are interesting? And do you pick your modules on the 1st of September.. and do you realistically have to have choosen your modules on that day if so? Have I asked enough questions?

    :P

    Cheers

Hey, not able to answer everything but I'll try help!
Online registration for incoming first years begins next Thursday the 25th, this is for personal information and fees. On Thursday the 1st of September, Core/option and elective module registration takes place. The cores are usually preselected once the SIS (online registration system) knows of the subjects you are studying. Its best to know which modules you are wishing to take as module allocation is on a first come first served basis and they can fill up very quickly, best go online early in the morning. Options are a list of modules which you must choose so many from the list given, it will say at the top of the list the amount that must be taken. You pick modules within your programme (English and History) and then you are allowed to do a few modules called electives (cant remember how many for 1st Arts) outside of your programme so you can do modules from any other course, it doesnt have to be an arts subject. This link here http://www.ucd.ie/students/course_search.htm is the list of courses. Go into Arts ffull time and pick your subject at stage 1. Here you should see a list of modules and when you click into them, they'll provide you with the workload, module desription, how it is assessed, the time in which it takes place and what you will learn.

This link http://www.ucd.ie/incomingstudents/orientation_timetables.html contains the orientation week timetables. Be sure for Arts you pick the right one. It should say on that when you are to pick up your student card. You'll have the opportunity to become involved in the Arts peer mentoring programme in which a 2nd or 2rd year Arts student helps your transition from secondary school to 3rd level so they'll always be available to answer any other questions you might have. Hope that helped!

Hey thanks for all the helpful links, will have a look at them!

Just to clarify, modules are the subjects you will cover within the two subjects you wish to study.. whereas electives are extra subjects which you can choose to study alongside your cores?

You'll be handed your student card at orientation (which will also be your accomadation card if you're living on campus. If you miss this you can pick up your card in the Student centre the following week.

You're right about the modules. You have 12 modules each year - two of which are electives. They can be chosen from your own course, or elsewhere, and are given out randomly to people (who don't belong to that course). So if you are reading Arts and apply for an Engineering module and there are more people applying to that module from outside Engineering than there is space available, the elective spaces will be handed out randomly.

And if you're Arts Omnibus you have at least 3 subjects. :D

O.k that's great, cheers. And when do you choose your electives, are they at a separate date from choosing your modules?

And as you say if you're doing omnibus, you have at least 3 subjects? Can you explain this more, sorry if I'm being a bit dense.

Electives, for first year, are chosen at the same time as everything else.

Actually... joint major might be just 25 credits first subject, 25 credits second subject and 10 credits for electives. Not 100% sure myself. :p

Omnibus students pick from a whole... omnibus of subjects and then only become dual major (or single major) after first year.
