I've come into a bit of time off and fancy a cheap break in Europe, backpacking and Ryanairing it about. I'm looking for somewhere nice and quite/picturesque to hole up for a few days. I was in St Wolfgang near Salzburg in Austrian alps last year and thought it was amazing, however not cheap, so somewhere like that. Has anyone any suggestions? I'm also thinking of trying some rail journeys, If anyone could suggest anything?

an amazing part of the world

    Hi,

Im just back from an interrail trip in Eastern Europe. My route was Krakow - Budapest - Ljubljana - Lake Bled - Zagreb - Zadar!! Had an awesome time, and all the cities were amazing, just Zagreb was a little on the boring side i thought!! Always felt safe everywhere, and met some really nice people along the way. (All the cities are very cheap too, ive been to salzburg in the past, and theyre def not as expensive!!)

I flew with Ryanair, into Krakow and out of Zadar.... i think flights only cost around 200e, including a checked bag!! i travelled by train, just buying my ticket for the next journey as i arrived in each city, only cost around 100e in total for all tickets!

As with the post above, i would definitely recommend Lake Bled, so much to do there, if your into the outdoors...or if not you could just relax by the lake and go for a swim. I spent 2 days there, but wish i could have stayed longer!!

Hope some of that info helps, and enjoy your trip!! :):)

Sweet, thanks for that, I've a smaple Itinerary now. Are train expensive? I was thinking of maybe an interrail ticket but thats €370 for 10 out of 22 days travel. I am thinking of heading up home through France to the Eurotunnel tho, What do you think? buy a ticket or go bit by bit?

I didnt buy an interrail pass, and im glad I dint because I only spent about 100e on trains! But from what ive been told, eastern european countries are far cheaper than the western, so i guess it depends on where your going.....you'll have to decide if its worth buying a pass or not!! You can probably find out prices online, and work it out from there!

heres a rough idea of prices i paid per journey:

    krakow - budapest - 30e (including a bed, in a 6 person cabin)
    budapest - ljubljana - 30e
    ljubljana - bled - 10e return
    bled - zagreb - 15e
zagreb - zadar 15/20e (by bus)
