Cycling shorts under shorts. What's the benefit?

I know this was all the rage in a lot of sports about 10-15 years ago and people still do it in other sports but I've stuck this in the GAA section as it still seems to be quite common in GAA matches (just about everyone in the Roscommon v Tipperary minor match is doing it).

So is there any benefit? Does it really add anything to protect your hamstrings or is that just an urban myth?

i don't think there's a massive use for them. The idea (i understand) is that they help keep the hamstring and quad muscles warm, hence, less chance pulling them.

I've worn them before and pulled my hamstring so I suppose it is a bit of a myth...

Dont know why anyone would wear cycling shorts. I'd say they are wearing under armour, if they get a wallop, the under armour will give a certain amount of protection against soft tissue injury http://store.nike.com/IE/en_GB/?cp=EUNS_KW_NS09_IE_Google_B&l=shop,search,c-300/f-792/pn-1/sl-Pro#l=shop,pdp,ctr-inline/cid-300/pid-342102/pgid-341442

That link shows an example of them. Other main sports brands have their equivalent. But I know people that use that particular one and swear by it.

Thats basically it, don't see a necessity for them in Gaelic Games though, more use in rugby on a cold, wet day where you spend more time rolling around in it:p

They make sense alright and probably explains it. You just don't see as many soccer or rugby players wearing them as GAA ones. Maybe it's because of the 'hot pants' GAA players wear that they're more noticeable (and that's a debate for another day - why are GAA shorts so tight fitting? It's not the 80's anymore)

They give the hammys extra warmth. I wear them in winter and cold summer days, don;t really like wearing them in matches tho, but to each their own I suppose.

I wear em to stop chaffing, big legs and stuff in between isn't too pleasant... The ones I wear are like boxer briefs though in terms of fit, wouldn't be as long as cycling shorts.

Mostly the reason I wear them any way.

Marc O Se was caught out badly once in a club match were his private features were nastily revealed. Photographer should have known better than to publish that picture. Bet he wished he wore bicycle shorts after that. :D

Having suffered unintentionally exposing myself while playing a football match I can safely say that I've worn bicycle shorts every match and training session since. It's not a nice feeling when you have to stop chasing down a corner-forward to put your lad back in your shorts!

I thought they stopped the build up of lactic acid and this was the main reason for wearing them?

I think this is true but I also heard somewhere (cant remember where) that your muscles get used to having this artificial warmth and so weaken, making them easier to pull. Dont ask me to back this theory up, but I can see the logic behind it.

According to this report they can enhance sporting performance and reduce injury - I have the full report if anyone wants a read of it

I wear them to keep stuff where they're suppose to be.

I personally stay away from the long versions, but i wear the Under Armour brand boxer length shorts. They arent much longer than GAA shorts. Wear their Cold Gear version in the winter to keep warm, and their Heat Gear version in the summer to keep cool.

The long ones just look stupid, ala Tyrone's Sean Cavanagh

I heard that they make blood carry oxygen to your muscles quicker. not sure how

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57 ✭✭sportinglegend

There is a massive difference between cycling shorts and compression shorts which the likes of BSc and Skins sell. Most GAA players are now using either the BSC shorts or Skins.

When you use compression gear it speeds up blood flow and this also gets more oxygen to your muscles which will allow them to perform better.

Increased blood flow will also help to get rid of lactic acid build up which will allow for an increased workload and you can perform at peak level for longer.

There is also some research into the fact that improved oxygen levels will help with Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness so reducing recovery time between training and matches etc.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snood_(headgear)#Football

Though popular for many years with European footballers like Gianluigi Buffon - in the 2010-11 English football Premier League season, a number of high profile players including Carlos Tevez and Samir Nasri were seen to be wearing tubular neck scarves and commentators erroneously referred to them as "snoods". The apparent new fashion was much derided by commentators, prompting one journalist to state that 'snoods are the new gloves' in professional football

Thank god we have a tough guy like you keeping an eye out for stuff that has the potential to soften us up

I have no doubt whatsoever that the average townie intercounty player would bury you, snood or no snood.

I went to the CCCC and the DRA and they rescinded the yellow. I'm only human and make mistakes.

Good luck and carry on :)

Bicycle shorts are used to provide warmth for .... the spectators in the stand as you're subbed yet again after a few bicycle short inspired fancy flicks don't come off raising to boiling point the temperature gauge of any poor auld fellas in the stand. Poor aul fellas would definitely hate bicycle shorts Declan Lynch would tell us.
Now as for white boots and bicycle shorts combined. Spectators would get warmed by the invective as soon as you'd leave the dressing room to run on for the warmup.
If snoods make an appearance we may have aul fellas requesting lads be removed from club panels before throw in. Any player sporting that apparel would be likely to send them apoplectic.
Not that long ago these same aul fellas may have seen Denis Kearney step in for a junior game for Swinford in his wellingtons.

i was actually playing in that match and the main reason for them really is generally they allow your muscles to recover alot faster by helpin to remove lactic acid

first off they are compression shorts not cycling shorts.

they keep heat in hamstring, glutes and quads also stops chaffing

Do people really just read the first post in a thread that's over a year old and post a reply?

I wear cycling shorts (and yes, they're cycling shorts, not compression shorts) mainly in the cold because as a goalkeeper, there's not much worse than getting a belt from a ball on the inside upper upper thigh. THE PAIN! Plus, it hides my cup, and all it's contents ;)

I wear the bicycle shorts all the time. I believe they will be ideal for when my Ibrahimovich moment arrives. In the mean time i find i'm able to score points off my left much easier with these shorts on.
