One of the central figures for Hammer Studios has died at the age of 83.

When the fledgling company decided to branch out into a programme of adaptations of the Gothic classics it was Sangster who was at the core of the creative team that gave us Horror of Dracula, Curse of Frankenstein, The Mummy etc. His original screenplays emphasised psychological drama with the woman in peril thriller A Taste of Fear/Scream of Fear (1961) and the Bette Davis mini-classic The Nanny (1965) standing out.

He also directed late Hammer entries such as The Horror of Frankenstein and Lust for a Vampire and Fear in the Night.

He only directed three films and they weren't up to much. Terence Fisher he was not.

Comparing him to Terence Fisher is very unfair given that Sangster was far better known as a writer than director. His writing credits for the 'big three' Hammer films (Curse of Frankenstein, Dracula & The Mummy) deserve recognition if nothing else.

Here's a nice obit by Kim Newman in the Guardian...
