Hi, I'm moving to the UK next week and was hoping to buy a car after a couple of months. I have ~2 years named driver's experience on my dad's car and passed my test in February. I'm a 24 year old female.

Even putting my age in as slightly older, adding a full UK licence, and making the vehicle a crappy tiny-engined one, ALL the insurance websites are quoting me a minimum of £4000 for third party, fire and theft.

Does anyone know why this is?? A comparable quote with an Irish insurer on Irish roads is approximately €600.

I'm really disappointed, I won't be able to buy a car in England until my mid thirties at this rate! :(

Try phoning them? Usually works out better.

Had a friend who moved to UK recently and had a similar problem to you albeit not quite as severe. Although he did not have a full NCB he had 3 or 4 years claims free if I recall correctly. The best quote he could get was about 3 times what he was paying here in Republic of Ireland.

Seemingly UK insurers ignore previous driving experience in another country for the first year driving in the UK. Then in the second year they will allow for your foreign driving experience. In my friends case he is expecting his premium to drop dramatically come next renewal time as then he expects they will treat him as having a 4/5 NCB (assuming no claims are made in the meantime).

It does seem a wee bit odd to me but I'm just rehasing what my friend told me....

As ever do shop around..ring as many brokers/ insurance companies as possible...it may end up being well worth it.

Have you only sought out 3rd party F&T quotes? When I first passed test and used online brokers (confused.com, comparethemarket.com etc), I looked for a 3rd party quote to see if it would be much cheaper - it was 3 times as expensive as very few companies would quote. You might e having similar issues. Try looking for comprehensive quotes too.

Ring a few brokers is all I can suggest.

Ring a few brokers is all I can suggest.

The online quotes she got are all brokers, presumably should have had 20 or more quotes from each. Off line brokers can be helpful too but fr UK, some things are more important than others - including post code (not much you can do about that one), whether commuting included and occupation. For the last one do some online searches for ways to finesse this. Some are red flags for certain age groups and types of car.
