What, if any cars are within the realms of bangernomics but also diesel.(1-2k budget) Preferably 2litre or lower but definately no higher than 2.5.

Hope no one is upset by my recommending one of them :pac:

Re that particular one, auto is a plus but if it's on the original trany fluid at 145k miles that's the first thing I'd be getting done, that along with a breather filter for the turbo.

    I would consider these too.........

Interesting thread. The citroen looks clean, they are really outstanding second hand value . I had a bx and a xantia , both very comfortable , most people like or hate Citroens , me I think they are alright :p At around 1500 that 02 one looks a bargain

A couple of weeks ago I missed out on a Northie '01 R75 Connoisseur SE Tourer CDTi (all extras inc.tv and heated leather) with 88k miles and 1 previous owner for £1500 plus €480 to clear.:(

I'd also suggest looking at the Omega diesels eg..This one though it'll be a bit outside your budget ;)

Good thread idea. That Rover is nice, already spotted it on donedeal. Check the C5 very carefully. Suspension spheres can be a pain in the stones to replace

Yep, just like the other thread says bangernomics and very seldom people post bangernomic cars in it, so i'm just keeping with the trend. Anyway back on topic,

You really can't lose with those diesel 75's.

Allow the idiots to proclaim them an old man's car while you drive around in something with probably the best interior ever in its class for peanuts.

Yeah, that one with 145k though and the €1950 asking price isn't the best you'd do though, I reckon it has a manky fabric interior too. Well worth waiting 'till a nicely specced one comes along.

I think I'll go diesel ZT this time next year.

    Giving up the passat?

Actually it'd be to replace a 1.3L petrol auto Honda Fit/Jazz that's doing far too much mileage at speeds it was never really designed to do and costing a fortune in the process.

If I was giving up my own I'd like something like an Audi A6 or maybe a late E39 5-series. Would have to be comfy, able for the miles and preferably with toys like cruise control etc

I'm half afraid to ask why :p but it's true.. as a small city car it's great, but not so much doing 5/600km a week at motorway speeds. :(

Oh, add a nice 03-era E-class to my wishlist too though I gather I'd probably be mad taking that on, and probably not old enough yet? :p

A nice 03 in silver with a nice set of wheels, I'd have one in heartbeat.

yea but is that generation not subject to a whole list of nasty, expensive issues? I think I asked about it here before and was told best avoided?

Pity, cause "old man" car or not I like them! I had a 06 E320 diesel as a loan one time and it was driving a very comfy, highly specced sofa but with plenty of power and more of a cruiser which would suit my motorway runs perfectly

You should be able to pick up a late '02 (old model) E220 CDI for that kind of cash.
The newer ones (03 onward) had front wishbones made of chocolate and there has been issues around the center console electrics, but I'm not too sure what the issue was.
I will be getting one myself mid to late next year. I have a Petrol (Bangennomics job) one at the moment and love it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,694 ✭✭✭✭L-M

I've driven a 05 320cdi Avantgarde, red with cream leather, probably the nicest Merc I've been in/driven.

Every car is subject to issue's to be fair, there are plenty of peope still driving them :P

Thats a bargain right there, would do 50mpg all day, means to an end etc.

That car would pay for itself if you were doing the mileage..FFS

For what it is, it is overpriced by about €200 imo.
You are correct though. Good economy from Diesel so cheap to run. But tax is for a 2ltr so near €600 (as against a 1.6 petrol car) and mileage is over 130k.
You could do better for €1k I think.

Diesel bangernomics does not get any better, for the year its low mileage. My 05 has 10k up on that.

True, I suppose it would be hard to get a Diesel of the same vintage for cheaper.

It would be a very hard choice! but at least you wouldn't have a guzzler sitting outside your house waiting to be taxed! and filled with expensive petol.. evil
