Thinking of buying a laptop

Hi Does anyone know how long a laptop will last. I have a dell inspiron 9400 thats coming up to its 5th yr. I use my computer about anything from 10 hours one week, the next I could use it for about 20 yrs. I have just bought new anti virus and am due to install on pc in 2 days. But I am now thinking is it worthwhile, will my laptop last another yr. If I thought I'd get another yr out of this I would be happy but in the last 6 months my pc has gone very slow.
Also my daughter is now 6 and believe or not was showing to use the touch pad in school (in junior infants) and would like something she will be able to use in the yrs ahead. Would it be beneficial to get new laptop with windows 7 rather than vista. I find vista grand but have been told after you use windows 7, vista is rubbish.

    Any advice appreciated

    Thanks
    Paul

Laptops get slow because the Operating System gets bogged down and bloated over time. If you were to backup all your data onto an external hard drive and put Vista back onto the laptop i'd bet you'd see a huge performance increase.

Also, don't buy anti-virus. It's a waste of money in my opinion. Microsoft security essentials is a free alternative that is perfectly fine imo. I've been using it for a long time and i've never had trouble. Also, you wont have any annoying pop-ups asking to spend money on it again in a year.

Vista is fine, in many respects Windows 7 is pretty similar.

Thanks I will try that. I just hope the inside of the laptop will last, cos I do use it alot. I know you're only supposed to use laptops for short amount of time but sometimes between me and wife using it, it could be on for up 6 hours continous. I suppose desktop would be better cos of the fan but laptop is handy space wise. But I have a external hard drive so Its worth a try.

    Thanks

Laptops can be used for as long as needs be, they're not supposed to be used just for short periods.

I ran my laptop almost 24/7 for a number of years. The only thing that happened to it was that the battery was completely shot. But that's just what happens really.
