Just wondering how everyone else feels about the fools doing the soccer anymore, Like Jonny Giles shouldnt be on TV anymore He hasnt a clue, I thought they were trying to bring some new faces through with Richard Sadlier who I thought was good, But saying that I die a little inside when I see Ronnie Whelan, Matty Holland or Kenny Cunninghams on, Dont see why they cant be more like the rugby where they have 2 good pundits and Hook just to argue, Dont see why they dont just have Souness, Brady and Dunphy all the time

I think Johnny Giles is an excellent pundit. He has a great footballing brain which shows through in his analysis and he calls a spade a spade.

    I hate that Kenny Cunninghams!

is Souness back? think hes class as a pundit

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 833 ✭✭✭barbarians

I think Giles is an excellent pundit too. Whelan is ok, not great. Dunphy is a troll but does make some worthy points. Souness is a decent pundit.

Sadler and Cunnigham are the future, prefer Cunnigham myself.

Like John Giles and I'm a big fan of Kenny Cunningham, not a Dunphy fan but I admire the fact he speaks his mind and none of the PC carp the beeb comes out with.

Think they tend to be less harsh on Irish players.

Kenny Cunningham is a great pundit imo.

Perfectly okay points being made tonight, esp the way Arsenal have gone backwards due to Wengers "jam tomorrow" development policies.

Dumph and Souness only get wheeled out for the internationals/CL stuff these days, can't remember the last time either was on a Saturday show.

Im just sick of the way Jonny Giles talks about the good aul days:rolleyes:, as for Kenny and Ronnie they would be the main reason i change the channel, they are just so boring and basically repeating the same stuff week in week out, Like I dont understand why they were talking bout Joey Barton trying to get sent of trying to be funny it was all just a bit unprofessional

Richard Sadlier is very good I think. I know he's an ex-player, but it's good to see what would be unfamiliar faces to most people make appearances on football shows based on well-articulated knowledge of the game and tactical insight rather than their status as famous players. Unlike Sky who, for example, released a perfectly excellent host in Mark Bolton from Revista La Liga and brought in an ex-player in Scott Minto to replace him.

ya im a fan of richie sadlier too...which he was on more often

Like Richard Sadlier.. and its nice that he has being given the opportunity after his career ended prematurely with injury.

Johnny Giles is ok, if a little one dimensional (i.e. the whole honesty of effort thing). Kenny Cunningham is brilliant in reading what exactly is going on in a game, there are very few pundits who can analyse a game like he can. I think Kenny actually is one of my favourite people on soccer. I agree about Ronnie Whelan though. His general lack of knowledge on the game is awful, and his Liverpool bias is a little sickening.

The whole build up to the Tyne-Wear derby was awful. A video package of Joey Barton footage when he lost the plot on the pitch from 3 or 4 seasons ago and a load of "When Joey Barton's about, expect controversy" type shít.

Jimmy Magee's commentary for it was quite shocking.

On an altercation between Cabaye and Bardsley and tempers flared somewhat:
    Where's Joey?

    ---

On the penalty incident when the ball clearly struck Larsson's hand:
There's Joey Barton screaming for a penalty in his usual calm manner.... NOT.

He wasn't the only one appealing FFS.

    ---

    Darragh Moloney:
Well there wasn't much to see regarding Joey Barton this week

    ---

    Giles:
    I don't rate Newcastle

    Darragh:
    Why?

    Giles:
When you've got someone like Barton in your team, you're asking for trouble

    Utter shít in their "analysis".

Well put. Bit of a Barton-centric editorial slant on the whole affair alright. And I agree about Magee, he's two seconds late with his comments on nearly everything. RTE could actually delay the footage to match it and it would sound better.

The lad commenting on the Everton match was poor as well. He called the penalty appeals after the climbing on Cahill as shouts for handball, then incorrectly called Cahill's follow-up as a goal when it had gone wide.

    Get well soon, George Hamilton!

Does Didi Hamann still do punditry for RTE? He was very good.

No. He was only there for the World Cup. Thought he was very good. Also thought Irwin was quite good when they had him in even if he is a tad boring to listen to.

Came here to mention that very man, hes managing Stockport as far as I know, so Id say his punditry career is on hold, he really was a breath of fresh air on the panel during the last world cup though.

Is Hamann still playing football? I have a memory of him leaving early from the world cup punditry early for Pre season. Irwin was descent aswell, lacks the controversy factor that RTE love though.

Didi's German/Liverpudlian mixed accent is hilarious.

Ronnie is way to biased towards to be on the show, Richard Sadlier should be on everyweek, Im a big fan of his also agree that Denis Irwin was good, Totally agree about Jimmy, Ive always hated his commentating for years

There was also what Jimmy McGee said when Barton got booked, can't remember word for word but was along the lines of: the match wouldn't be complete without a Joey booking.

I say Giles is alright for the premier league, that is all he knows like. In the Champions League it has to be pointed out to him which side is playing and whether they are good or not.

What is Giles position again? I can remember at the Champions League knockout stage last season it was mentioned, the technician? Nothing official of course, but he was given a name.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,900 ✭✭✭Eire-Dearg

Sadlier and Cunningham do great analysis. Always interesting, and display a great tactical knowledge.

Ronnie Whelan is biased towards Liverpool? Could've fooled me unless he's changed his tune recently.

I also like Cunningham and Sadlier to solid pundits. I still love the entertainment factor of Giles Brady and Dunphy for international and Champions league games.

Cunningham, Sadlier, Brady, Whelan, Holland are tools.

Giles is good except for his knowledge of modern players, which is unacceptably bad. Dunphy serves a purpose (to stir things up).

I find it hard to believe that there's not a better commentator in the whole of Ireland than the 76 year old Jimmy Magee.

    In all fúcking fairness.

Giles is an awful pundit. He spews out the same neo-conservative crap after every single game and very predictable in what he will say. His unprofessionalism is deplorable. He will not do any research before a game which is why she spews out the same crap game after game. His knowledge on football ends at Dover and we as Licence fee payers have to fund him saying "Well Bill, we dont know much about them" every single time the EPL team plays a foreign team. If RTE actually had strong presenter for once, he more than any other pundit on tv would be torn to shreds for some of the nonsensical tripe he comes out with.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,709 ✭✭✭✭Cantona's Collars

Souness is a great pundit, watch him on RTE then on Sky to see the difference in his analysis. It seems that he is hamstrung in what he can say on Sky whereas he has admitted to having more freedom in voicing his opinions on RTE.

I like Giles as a pundit,he pulls no punches-compare him to Redknapp on Sky who is afraid of offending anyone whereas with Giles he isn't afraid to slate a player for being shite.

A lot of people who watch football on English tv will switch to RTE for the punditry if the same game is being shown.

Dunphy just seems to play the role of pantomime villian on the panel, great for stirring up an argument but little else in the way of insight.

    +1

I even hear Bill O' Herlihy say sometimes about 20 minutes into the program "Well John, these are the teams that are playing tonight." FFS like.
