Bicycle racks in Trinity

    Hi everyone,

From the looks of things, I will be starting my studies in Trinity in September and I'm very happy to be able to say that :).

I live about 15 minutes of walking distance from the college, but I also got a new bicycle for my birthday last month. I have a few questions and maybe some of you might be able to answer them.

Is Trinity a safe place to keep your bicycle during lectures? Is the campus known for bicycle theft? Are there reliable racks/poles/whathaveyou to lock your bicycle and not have to stress out over it for the whole day?

I've walked through the campus several times and saw many bicycles at the science end, which is where I'll be studying. Is that a safe place to keep a bike, or is it just not worth the risk cycling to school on a brand new one, if it only takes 15 mins walking? I have a level 9 ABUS lock, if it's relevant.

Words of advice are very welcome :)

There are loads of bike racks all over the place, and a lot of people cycle in and leave their bikes locked up around campus. So, yeah, I'd definitely say go for it! Many's the time I left my bike down by the Hamilton end (the science bit) and it was always fine. It's a piece of crap though, so maybe that's why...

I've heard of bikes being stolen, but never from busy areas around the Arts block or front square or whatever (moreso from quiet places where there would often be very few people around, like... outside the Biochemistry building).

There is apparently some sort of swipe card access bike yard... somewhere. Dunno where though, but I'm sure someone else here will know.

Search through this forum and you'll see this has been discussed a bit in the past. In general it is very secure and I've never had any problems, but bikes do go missing. Get yourself a second lock (a cable/chain to go with a U-lock), don't leave your bike in isolated places, and you should be fine.

Thanks for the responses guys. Yeah, I have a cable to go with my U-Lock, so I might give it a shot. Should probably be OK leaving it in a place where there's a good amount of people :).

There's the bike rack beside the chemistry building which is right behind the security attendant's booth at the entrance by the dental hospital. Fairly safe imo.

Yeah, its safe enough alright. Place beside the Licoln place entrance is best, if you can get there early enough.

I've seen bikes locked by the Ussher library that have been there, untouched, all summer.

I regularly steal bikes from college, and by the sound of your OP, you have a lovely, very-stealable bike, so I would err on the side of caution tbh.

Been in trinity 8 years now and my bike has been grand. As mentioned above I use both a cable lock and a U bar......most robbers will only have the tools to open one of these.

My usual spot now to keep my bike is between the Arts Theatre and College Health service (near creche). Its right infront of the college security building and with them constantly going in and out (and going out for smoke breaks) your is pretty safe there.

Depends on which part of college you're studying in too

Bikes are rarely stolen and when they do the tactic is usually for the thief to put another lock on your bike so you can't take it away and then they break your lock when there are very few people around. The trick to avoiding this is to go to Trinity security, present your student card and they can cut the extra lock off for you if you're nice enough to them (presuming it can be cut off with bolt cutters). This happened to my friend in second year and she's since bought a U-lock and not had any trouble.

The only thing about the science end is that it fills up fast and extra spaces are hard to find. However, if you're studying there it's odds on you'll have ****loads of hours and will have to be there early anyway. ;)

So what if the thief is, god forbid, a Trinity student? They lock your bike, go to security and have them cut your lock off?

I'm going to answer this with another question, does security record the student numbers of the people this has happened to?

If you buy an ~18mm U-Lock it wont be possible to cut without a very loud angle grinder. If the tumbler is cheap it'll still be possible to drill out, but if you get one with a circular key this is a lot harder to do.

I doubt security will cut a lock with out some sort of proof first.

Never Heard of security Cutting a lock , Unless you girl and use your .. Charm on them . A friend of mine had to go in with their father and cut the lock of themselves as the Lock Broke

Invest in a Solid Kryptonite Lock , You can get a brill lock chain combo for about 50 quid , Think of it as an investment . Odds are your Bike will be untouchable with one of those things on it , Just Don't loose the keys or you'll need very heavy machinery to get it off!

The keys have a serial number on them, Kryptonite can send a new set if you lose them.
