A 32-year-old man has been arrested after an Austrian aircraft was forced to divert to Shannon Airport this morning.

The flight, carrying 200 passengers, was en route from Washington to Vienna when cabin crew reported an incident on board.

The man was detained by gardaí on arrival at Shannon shortly before 7am and arrested under the Air, Naval and Transport Act.

    The aircraft remains at Shannon.

According the report I heard on the radio the man in question had to be physically restrained by a number of other passengers who pinned him to the floor of the aircraft!

They should make the idiot pay for the full cost of the diversion.

Yes, or a lengthy mandatory jail sentence. The punishment should be severe in any case. The mess this causes for an airline, not to mention the expense.

Yes agreed, mandatory prison, but why should we have to foot the bill for something that happened in International air space on a foreign aircraft. He should be deported to the destiation (Vienna) and let the Austrians deal with him.

Do any of these idiots ever get jail time after these type of incidents? It always seems to me that despite getting arrested and sometimes appearing in court they get away very lightly.

I doubt the DoJ wants to spend large sums of money imprisoning someone for something that only ends up in our jurisdiction due to Shannon's position as the main eastern Atlantic emergency runway.

Maybe he was short changed? :D

There's also the possibility that the passenger may have a medical episode causing his behaviour.

Fair point!!! They should fine them huge amounts of money and then turf them out of the country.
