Knee replacement surgery

    Hi Guys,

My Aunt, who is in her mid-sixties, has osteoarthritis in one knee. She had keyhole surgery over a year ago to remove some loose cartridge in an attempt to alleviate the pain. Matters haven’t improved really and walking even short distances are now difficult and painful, and the strain on her posture are resulting in back pain to compound everything else. She's now considering a knee replacement, which she was informed by the consultant was an inevitable conclusion at some stage anyway.
My question is, have any of you, or a close relation, had this surgery and if so, how successful was it?

Also, who is regarded as an expert orthopaedic surgeon for this type of procedure.

    Thanks in advance!

I am in my late forties now, and had my right knee replaced 8 years ago, followed by my left knee nearly 3 years ago, I had it done due to early onset of osterarthritis. The decision to have the surgery was easy for me as it had got to the stage that I had both day and nightime pain although I had been suffering from intermittant pain for the previous 5 or so years. Once you are in the hands of a skilled Orthopaedic surgeon (many now specialise in just hip & knee replacements) the surgery is very succesful. The key to getting your full mobility back after surgery is hard work with the physios ! the relief from pain is great. Good luck to your aunt
