There's a good chance I'll be starting a computing course in the next month or so. My old laptop is too slow now so need to buy a new one for college.

I'm tempted to look into getting a MacBook,(not sure which one yet) but I'm not sure if I should mainly because I've never used a MacBook before(Windows only) plus in a computing course it will probably be all windows related ? So what happens if I'm the only one with a Mac :/ ?

Also, had a look at the student section on the apple site but it doesn't list that many colleges, including the one I'll be going to. The €75 store credit isn't that great either :( would rather a free iPod touch or something to sell to someone.

    Thanks

What computer course are you going to do?
Macs can run both Windows and OSX so, no need to worry about not being able to run programs.
The chances at this stage of you being the only one with a mac are pretty small, I've seen loads of people with Macs in college.
Really, macs and windows based machines are the same thing, although i'm sure fans of both OS's will say otherwise.
Personally, I'm going for a Macbook pro 13inch for college, i'm going to do Industrial design. It has no advantage over, lets say a Asus laptop, but I just simply want to give macs a try. It will be my second mac (although my first was a cheap second hand Powerpook G4) i'm expecting it to be more a less the same as a windows laptop in terms of usage.
Of course, you'll find it different then a windows, as it's a new OS that you haven't used before, but it will be the same learning curve as windows vista/XP/7 Etc was. I found the mac easy to get use to.
One thing I don't like about macs, which has stopped me from buying a mac for the past year or two was the price, if your on a low budget, a Windows machine will be just fine for you, but if you have the money, and you want a Mac, I say go for it.!

Pretty much summed it up in a nutshell for you. Only serious gripe I'd have against Mac's is the fact they are incredibly overpriced. Your probably better of searching around online and picking up a Toshiba/HP/Acer etc for around 400quid and it will do the job.

Personally I would stick with a laptop running Windows and then maybe partition it with a version of Linux. When I was studying computers in college we did alot of Linux stuff aswel as Windows stuff so was handy having the best of both worlds.

Virtualbox, runs windows very nicely for free too.

I only had to ever run windows specificaly for a course because they used a windows only piece of software, but is good to have and use windows, linux and osx.

I'd invest in a copy of VMWare Fusion if you plan to run Windows. You have your Windows or Linux machine just like an app on the Mac, and can do stuff like Snapshots and Rollbacks on them.

If you have the money for vmWare buy it, but Virtualbox can do snapshots and rollbacks too.

It cant however have windows apps in the dock like paralells can and is not as polished as vmWare fusion but it has given me no problems.
