Right, probably asked a billion times before but here goes:

    Dermighty

    Age: 25

    Living in private rented accomodation

Have never applied for a grant or BTEA.

Working less than 20 hours a week but I'm a permanent, full time employee, I'm a bouncer.

College history: 2004-2005 attended UCC for a year and dropped out at the end of the year

2007-2009 (2 years) attended UCC, paid fees for first year, got free education for 2nd year and dropped out at the end of 2nd year.

Presently (September 2011) waiting to start a level 7 degree in CIT (CAO offers pending). I applied as a mature student but changed my choice of course and CIT dont accept mature student apps after January 31st or whatever so I'm basically going on my LC results from years ago.

Now I rang CIT to find out what the story was with fees and they said that its €2,000 registration and €954 tuition. I was also told by the woman in the CIT fees office that I definitely would not get a maintainence grant as I'd never applied for one when I was getting free education.

    So what's the story?

I was told by CIT that the €2,954 has to be paid up front in September. That's obviously a lot of cash and I was pretty sure I was eligible for a grant as I earn low wages, am a mature student and live in private rented accomodation which I pay for myself.

Is anyone able to shed any light on my status?

    ^^

i dont think the person who told you that is correct.

In general, you will not get a grant for repeating a year or attending a course at a level that does not represent progression from what you have done before. These conditions are specified in paragraphs 14 to 17 of the Student Grant Scheme 2011 (pdf). However, ‘second chance students’ may be eligible for a grant. A ‘second chance student’ is someone who is aged over 23, did not successfully complete an earlier course and is returning to pursue an approved course after at least 5 years.

Yeah it's been 2 years on my part.

In fairness there are always people more needy than myself but if someone is getting a grant to do a masters then I should surely get one to do an undergrad. I ****ed up the first time in college but I paid my fees and if not applying before renders me ineligible for a grant this time round then this system is a load of crap. I've been paying income tax for the last two years!!!! :P
