DIT migrating to Google Apps - Bye bye MyMail!

I saw on the website today that student (and presumably staff) accounts are being migrated to Google Apps on Monday next.

This is a great thing, and I praise it highly, but I wonder why there is a migration so soon after the MyMail changeover earlier this year, and secondly, why are we only getting Gmail and Google Calendar?

I am a user of Google Apps, so I don't see why services such as Docs weren't included. For example, I know my course (and many others in DIT) use the absolutely awful "Webexone" system. Why don't we get docs and let staff use them for class materials and whatnot? It's a far better idea.

The MyMail changeover from earlier in the year was very messy. Maybe this is to avoid all the confusion we had last time. I've been pulling my mails into my personal Gmail anyway for sometime.

Yeah it is awful. My course uses webexone isntead because webcourses is so awful!

I'm not here to cause a ruckus, but would you believe that we still have none officially. The student union haven't been forthcoming in sorting it out, despite efforts. Anyway, that's another story.

I've not even seen webcourses. Do you know much DIT pays for Webexone? It's obscene. If you've got a group of say, 200, they're paying $1300 for a mere 15GB of storage. And come on, do you really think they're hitting anywhere near that space. Surely not.

Now, imagine that price for all the other classes/courses using Webexone. And imagine (from what it would appear) how many courses still have students who have left/moved year still listed- thus boosting up the "group" number, thus boosting prices. Madness.

Well the transition has been successfully completed and I must say the new system looks very good. Great job DIT

One thing I liked about the old system was the automated emails that would come up when you began to type them. There should be a database of all DIT contacts synced in

When I log into my mail, the address is 'studentnumber@mydit.ie' (my student number, not my name).
Is it the same for anyone else?

If you click into your account settings, you will see that people can reach you via that or the original way of firstname.lastname@student.dit.ie or firstname.lastname@mydit.ie

Yup, but if you look at account setting there are a number of different emails linking to that one account

    Such as
    Name@student.dit.ie
    Name@mydit.ie
    Studentnumber@mydit.ie
    Studentnumber@student.dit.ie

Thanks. I guess there is no way (when sending an email) for the email address to appear solely as a name rather than a student number.

I believe that it is by default name@mydit.ie when sending

Mine is 'Name' followed by studentnumber@mydit.ie as sender. Can't seem to change that.

Is there any way to incorporate this with you're current Gmail a/c? So I would just have to sign into one, not the two of them.

You can forward it: settings, forwarding and POP, add a forwarding address. You will need to verify it with a code supplied to you to the forwarding email - however it's easy to do it with the gmail instructions.

the new google system just asked me for my login so i used my student number and password from the old system, now my new google email address is coming up as 'my student number'@dit.ie. is there anyway to change it back to my name like in the old system? i really doubt anyone is going to be able to remember my student number every time they want to send me a mail.

All the old email addresses still link to the same account, so all mails will be sent to the one inbox. However the problem is when we send emails it comes up as the student number. This hasn't been solved yet.

Well I managed to solve it, at least in my own case. I went to settings, accounts and imports, and added the 'name@mydit.ie' as a new address. It asks you to supply your DIT account name and password, connects with the server. (At least I think this is what happens, and it worked for me).
The next step is to add this address as 'default'. Your outgoing emails will appear as your 'name@dit' and not your 'studentno@dit'.
As mentioned above, receiving mails to your 'name@dit' isn't a problem, they will automatically reach you.

The way I solved it was:
Go to account settings Then to view Data stored with this account, then manage all email settings ( Under gmail half way down the page. The click the accounts tab and add the account you want to send from to the send mail as section. Confirm it in the email they send and make sure to set it as default

That is the same thing as I did.

Yeah I just kinda did it there, if you go into your account setting on each email address and enable multiple sign-in on each you can easily swap between them without signing in and out.

Ah webexone... Pinacle point of me realizing how brilliant DIT's IT services are. I'll miss it if it leaves. 'tear' :(
