Advice on graphics card

I have a media centre I built a few years ago. It has been working away quite happily with a 32" LCD screen. Last week I bought a 46" Panasonic full-HD plasma and connected it up. It is fantastic - my own cinema (given that the room is only ten feet long!):D. The trouble is my graphics card is running too hot when I have it running for a couple of hours watching a movie, or whatever.

I only use the PC for Internet and watching AVI/MKV movies. I never do gaming. The graphics card I have is a Radeon HD3650 Silent Magic PCI Express 2.0 512Mb DDR3 and the motherboard is an MSI P43 Neo-F, Intel P43 ATX board.

What graphics card would be best for my needs (full HD, silent)? I could go out and get a 1 or 2gb card but don't know if it'd be compatable with the mobo. I don't want to spend a fortune on it either - €50- €60 max.

Are you running at a higher resolution? the size of your screen shouldn't increase the load on the GPU. Rather then adding a card with a fan (small fans can me more easily heard) perhaps an addition 120 mm case fan blowing over the GPU?

Yes, the resolution was at 1366 x 768 and has now gone to full HD. For some reason it won't allow 1366 across anymore and the only resolution that fills the screen correctly is 2560 x 1600 or some such. Considering I am now planning on getting an internal bluray player, is the GPU sufficient or am I better off getting a newer one to cope with the demand? Do I need such a high resolution on the TV without losing the look of movies, etc.? Lots of questions.;)

I can play bluerays at full HD on my 32 inch LG using a HD 5040 no probs. The default windows resolution is 1366 though so the same as your old setup.

You might also consider a PCI Cslot fan like the Thermaltake pci slot fan (google images that)

Thanks Carter. Intersting idea - I didn't know you could get a PCI fan. I presume it takes the heat out the back of the case. Maybe one of those coupled with slightly lower resolution will do it for me.

I got an AMD/ATI HD 5450 fanless card with HDMI out from Amazon....around ~€50 delivered iirc. I't's outputting to a full hd 46" lcd without issue.

    This.

Get a fanless HD5450 or even better for the same money a HD6450 if you can find it. Both will do 1080p fine and will run cooler than your old card. Also fanless will be silent obviously. Both can be got for under 45 delivered if you look around.
