Vehicle bought without logbook

Basically i went and did something very stupid and purchased a motorbike without out seeing the logbook first. Yes i know, it was beyond idiotic of me so theres no need to remind me.

Let me just briefly explain what happened. So i see an ad for a nice bike and i call up and organise a viewing. Now the guy lives across the country so i decide to get the bus down the following day and to meet him after hes off work.

I ask and he says he has the logbook. I tell him that if i decide to buy it ill need insurance for the ride home, so i ask him to send me the restriction cert for the bike (just a cert to allow L drivers on certain bigger bikes). He says no problem, he'll scan and email it from work the following day.

So next day, i get the email from a legitimate company email address quoting the guys name and with the cert attached. All good so i get insurance and head on down. Upon viewing, i like what i see and decide to buy. Then he takes out his documents and 'realises' he has forgotten the logbook. I ask how tf could u forget that and he sais he must have left it in the office with the restriction cert hmm...

I tell him no way and long story short he ends up convincing me that it was a genuine mistake. I felt safe enough as the rest cert has the guys details and the vehicle details. He promised to send on all the documents to my address, i give him permission to sign the logbook for me and send it off. Dont know why i trusted him???!

But now its been nearly a month and nothing. Shannon haven't received anything, his local motor tax office haven't either, i tried calling him recently and he has been avoiding my calls. I checked with the guards a few weeks back and the name and address on the restr cert is still the reg'd owner. not reported stolen at the time.

I know theres a form i can fill in if the previous owner doesnt send off the logbook but i think that requires my slip off the logbook which i dont have. Is there something dodgy going on here or is he just being lazy? Do i need to go to the guards asap. I'm worried that if i got the guards they'll call him up and he'll claim to have never even sold the bike. Please help!! :O

Hi, I bought a car a few years ago off my brothers friend, he lost the log book! Then the replacement never turned up, anyway to cut a long story short I contacted Shannon after about two months and they told me about a form to get and get it signed by a commisioner of oaths stating that I had purchased the car, I also had to get it filled out by a dealer to verify the chasis number and all that. I can't remember if I got it at the cop shop or tax office. You need to know the previous owners address I am sure though. I am not sure if this is the same procedure for a bike, maybe ring Shannon again this morning and ask them about this. Someone else might know what this form is called because I can't remember at all.

Sorry that wasn't really much help but you can claim ownership of it.

to the op if shannon have heard nothing then it is still registered in his name so you can speed as you like park as you like and he will get the fines it is in his interest to send the change of ownership forms to shannon surely

If I was you I would head straight for the toll bridge on the M50 and go through it a few dozen times. When the bills start arriving at his door for non payment I am sure he will contact you quick enough!!!

"That is a civil matter sir!" will be the Garda response.

You can claim ownership by filling out loads of forms and having them signed by a peace commissioner. DOT will explain the process. Ring them.

Not entirely seller interest, because at the moment OP has a motorbike which is not fully legally operational.

    1. First of all, insurers require a vehicle to be registered on inured persons name, which in this case isn't.
    2. He can't sell it without logbook.
    3. He can't ride it aborad, as while driving abroad registration cert is to be carried with you at all times.

Have they the ability to photograph from their FRONT windscreen, as a bike only has a REAR plate?

Some vans take rear shots of vehicles travelling away from the vans.
