When it comes down to it, everyone is out for themselves. We all know that.
But what about the 'the little things' - I can only throw out examples.

    • You could be waiting on a bus. a group of people waiting too (Happens alot in rush hour) bus pulls up. everyone scrambles to get on first. even tho in reality the bus could be empty.
    • You are approaching a till at a supermarket and some one "scoops" in before you. While often, they have a trolley load of stuff and you only have a few items.
    I could go on :pac:

So boards.ie do you believe life is a rat race through a through? that it doesnt matter what it is (little or big) people will suit themselves at all costs.

Is life a rat race through and through (from little to big things) 34 votes

Little victories like beating that aul granny to the check out thus avoid waiting the several centuries it would take for her to scrape out her pennies, pack her trolly thing and spew some inane sh!te to the cashier, keep me going.

No I give old people my seat if there's no place for them to sit. I find the real rat race is when I'm walking and the pedestrian lights turn green while I'm far away so I start running so I'll catch them. Always happens at a police station.

Over here you get fined 5 quid if you cross the road at a red light and the police catch you :(

That would be an ecumenical matter.

    :(

No, there are countless counter-examples of people not engaging in a rat race. Even something as simple as a queue is a counter example to your rat race. Same with people help each other, even online.

Should be introduced/enforced here, it'd save a lot of lives.

Why not ban cars, alcohol, fatty foods, jumping over fences, cycling, motorbikes, the sea, and the like too?

It would save a lot of lives you know?

I don't need some jobsworth shithead telling me not to cross the road until the green man comes.

I can see for myself that there is no traffic in either direction for 500 meters.

    Bleh.

In some areas, yes. Like money, stuff that keeps you from starving and a roof over your head.

But there are Gentlemen and Lady's out there too, there are proper Catholics, Muslims, Buddhists out there too.

    Only for rats.

Well...only for rats that have been captured and trained to chase a robot mouse on rails around a mini stadium with people standing around making bets....

Touché. While we're speaking in absolutes, lets get rid of the drink driving laws too. I can tell when I've had too much anyway.

Obviously the laws aren't needed where you've got 500 meters of free space.
Just go for a walk through Dublin city centre (Especially at intersections) and try count the amount of people who nearly get themselves knocked down. And of course, if some poor sod does get himself hit, the driver gets blamed more often than not.

As another poster said sometimes its the little victories...like the one I had today...

Whilst walking back to my car through the car park, I get honked at, this fella shouts out of the window of his car..' Hey, use the footpath'....turned to face this little fcukwit and said 'their isnt one'....queue him mouth open, didnt know what to say....as their wasnt one!!!!....and then in what seemed 30 minute delay of thinking of a good retort said to me 'not my problem is it'....he was fair pissed off.....laughed my head off........:D

I think a bit of healthy competition between each other is okay and such things keep me motivated. Whether my life is based around it? No, I don't think so.

    Leitrim?

Don't be ridiculous I wouldn't live in a place with no traffic lights I might be run over by a mad old woman on her way to mass!

Well I heard Leitrim didn't have traffic lights. Probably doesn't have rats either so they don't much racing I'd assume...

There are a few "alpha"-type jerks out there who think the world revolves around them and only them, but they're outnumbered by fundamentally civil people.

Lifes what you make of it your good self.

You wanna be a rat, your life, your choice!

Now like you've been programmed, be a good little consumer & get your mortgage & flashy motor, wife & 2.5 kids with 9-5 job

    Nice life....rat!

...........when the ship goes down, the rats drown.

I think the 'natural' way of life is for it to be a 'rat race'; all (yes, literally all) success comes at the expense of other people. Think limited college places and singers who make it over those who don't. Even if you find previously untouched gold buried under the ground, you are obtaining material (and probably, as a result, social) success over those who didn't find it.

That said, people should strive to be less ruthless in their everyday lives while aspiring to become successful over others.. try to make the world slightly less depressing for the losers as it naturally should be.

I have a figure in my mind that will allow me to live off my income for the rest of my life, that's the goal for me. Through a combination of investing, saving and simple(ish) living then it will be achieved.

Isn't that the whole point of going to work and earning money? To wake up one day and say to yourself "I don't have to go to work today, I can do what I want".

Yes. Leitrim is the proud owner of just one set of traffic lights. They are situated on the stretch of the the N4 that passes through Carrick on Shannon.

That's one set of traffic lights in the entire county.

Now some people might think that's fairly backward, but for those people who like driving without having to stop every 2 minutes, they would argue otherwise.

I had to laugh at the journalist reporting on the riots, seen a rioter robbing a TV and there he was, patiently waiting for the green man at the crossing around the corner, robbed TV in hand!
