Lads i feel ridiculous asking this - thankfully, I've never had to undertake anything more than a GP visit on my own but a friend of mine has a problem with her back which she has been told will require surgery. She was told this when she visited her doctor back home, and now she's back in Ireland and is wondering how to progress things.

As I said, I have no real insights into these things...presuming she goes to a GP and gets a letter of referral and then sets something up with a hospital? She has full health insurance and I'm wondering if this sort of thing could be handled by the Beacon or VHI swift clinic or anything like that?

Sorry, I do feel rather sheltered asking this but I've never needed anything more than a GP visit or the very rare trip to A & E to set me right. Any insights would be much appreciated.

The GP will be able to advise her best tbh. It's likely that he/she will suggest someone to take a look. If she wants to go private then she should mention that. The VHI Swiftcare clinics wouldn't handle this sort of thing, they are like a mini private A&E really. So likely that it will be the Beacon or one of the other privates she'll be heading to
