The house keeps banging!!!! it sounds like somebody slamming shut the door of a car (dull thump) outside,so much so that the dog goes mad sometimes cos he thinks there's someone after arriving.it happens at night mostly.the house is about 12 years old. is it just the roof settling?
Sometimes after a very warm hot day and if it starts to rain at night it goes crazy and bangs about one bang every 20secs for the duration of the shower of rain. is there anything that can be done? surely a roof would be well settled by now?

by the way Mods if this is in the wrong place move to where you think best.

    House music always bangs

I find the same with the expansion and contraction of wood on hot cold days

Have you had a look in the attic space? Wood expands when the air is moist and contracts when the air is dry. This goes on forever - it's the nature of wood. You say it is worse after rain - could be there is some point between the rafters and the roof tiles which could be missing a fixing, or the fixing is broken. As the timber expands, it causes the roof covering to boom in the same way as a drum skin.
There could also be a split in one of the roof timbers.
A trip up to the attic on a wet night should help pinpoint the source.

    ...sorry, couldnt resist!

We had a similar problem... couldnt find what it was until one rainy night, i went to put the bin out and copped it was the esb meter housing door on the side of the house slamming open and close in the wind!

in all the years ive been working in construction ive never heard a roof banging. air locks in pipes yes or maybe something loose hitting off something but i really dont think its your roof settling. there has to be a simpler answer but maybe i'm wrong

Is there a difference in the colour of your fascia and gutters?

Check your dishwasher or washing machine. Sounds similar to water hammer. If it's not coming from that try isolate where the noise is coming from.

Also if this has been happening since you moved in it could be dodgy piping.

I'd be 99% sure it's some sort of water hammer.
