Seriously why is this movie over 18s? It has no violence, no gore, no sex or nudity and no language so why is this over 18s?

Because kids today are too easily influenced. They let them see this, they'll all be wanting possessions and what not

I remember the good old days when 18's meant sex, violence or both. Seems really rare for a film to get an 18 at all these days, studios are so scared to make films that could get an 18(or nc-17 in the states) because it automatically means a bit less at the box office. That's why we got a Die Hard sequel with no swearing and why something like World War Z gets green lit on the condition it ends up being a PG-13.

Sure Lethal Weapon was 18's for crying out loud!

Just to point out though, Insidious is a Pg-13 in the states and 15's here according to the Xtra-vision website anyway.

you wouldnt get away with half the stuff Lethal Weapon has in it these days, even if it was an 18s rated movie (rare to begin with) sure Riggs smokes, that'd probably be enough to earn an 18 cert these days :pac:

A quick glance at IFCOs website would have informed you that the film contains very strong psychological menace and scenes of strong violence. But that wouldn't have given you the excuse to post a pointless thread now, would it?

I’m not sure what the Irish rating is, but the BBFC has since re-classified the first two Lethal Weapons as 15s. They are actually pretty soft on films these days.

I thought it was one of the best opening 45mins of any horror i'd seen very tense.

GOD the dribble that ensued after that, the moment those 2 clowns and the old hag comes into it, it was just RANK

I have to disagree. It was a classic case of where hype overcame substance. It started so well (except for the stupid current cliché in every American horror of "LOUD NOISES"). So, yeah start was ok. It was until the beast was uncovered that it got a little corny. There's specifically one scene I think it's sharpening it's claws or something and I'm sure I had the "wtf" look on my face.

But I don't think this should have been 18's. To be honest I can't remember anything that sadistic or gory just stupid cheap shocks.

    18s? 15s?

Damn I remember when stuff like Watership Down or the Plague Dogs were the kind of things that kids watched.

Or films like Tarka The Otter that did not rely on happy endings.

But it doesn't really contain any of that, there is no violence in it at all, certinly not strong violence.

I'm curious as to where the op (who is a notorious troll) got the idea that the film was rated 18s. In HMV all the posters have it down as being 15s and the review copy I got of the film has a 15s cert on the disc.

I was in Xtra Vision and they have rental copies with 18 cert on them.
Also the link to the IFCO website someone posted earlier conferming that it is in fact 18s for stong violence and menace.

Did they put stickers over the 15's cert from this pic?

In HMV today they had multiple copies ofthe Cider House Rules, some had 12s and others had 18 cert stickers on them.

The ifco has in the past made mistakes on their site but if Insidious has been upped to an 18s then it's not uncommon. Plenty of films with a cinematic 15 or 16 cert are upped to 18 for home release as the viewer is able to rewind the film and watch adult scenes over and over again. That was the reason that City by the Sea got an 18s on DVD as you could rewatch the drug scenes which were quite realistic and "learn" how to prepare them.

I've no idea how this was 18s. Although on play.com it says 15s. I suppose horror as a genre isn't suitable for 12 year olds but going strictly by what was (and wasn't) shown on screen it'd be 12s. I felt this was a better horror film wrapped in terrible cliches and poor execution. And the tiny budget didn't help either. There were some great parts to it, but the 'startle' horror of at least the first 40 minutes is so grating. The quiet OH MY GOD LOUD NOISE! is the cheapest form of horror imo.

Some people loved it, good for them, overal i wasn't impressed, thought it was a wasted opportunity.

I watched Insidious recently and I cannot remember any strong violence as such.

I don't get what's in Insidious that you could rewind and learn how to do. There are no adult scenes in it to watch over and over again. I'd almost slap the movie with a 12s cert but feel due to the nature of it it should be 15s but at that it's a very light 15s.

    ******SPOILERS******

Just watched the movie there. There is a fair amount of things worthy of at least a 15s rating.
Language - "You filthy whore", "I will rip your innards out", "You ****ing bitch",
Violence/Gore - Bloody hand print on the kid's bed, the scene where the demon tries to lick the woman - you can clearly see his disfigured face, people get shot and bleed in your man's astral projection (), murder with bare hands at the end,
    Sex/Nudity - nothing there really,
Drugs - no drugs, but I guess the movie might inspire people to try to achieve an out of body experience, which could lead to temporary paralysis when waking up, night terrors, etc., so probably not the best thing for kids... :P

The film shows kids crying with fear of demons, dead people coming to life and trying to attack the living, monsters crawling from under beds, scary faces in mirrors, doors opening on their own accord, etc.

I'm not saying it'd be completely wrong to let a 14 year old watch this film, but I wouldn't be surprised if they had nightmares afterwards. 18s might be pushing it, but definitely 15s!

It's rated 12 here in France and PG13 in the States. I thought Ireland had lightened up a bit on the old ratings.

the BBFC are great for explaining their reasons for the ratings they assign. In this case it was 15's. From their website:
    BBFC wrote:
The BBFC's Guidelines at '12A'/'12' state 'Moderate physical and psychological threat may be permitted, provided disturbing sequences are not frequent or sustained'. The scenes of horror and menace in INSIDIOUS are both frequent and sustained. The film is set in the contemporary real world, mostly in a house where one is supposed to feel safe and protected. A young boy's life is in danger for the entire film, supernatural events take place in broad daylight inside the house, and for much of the time the mother is left alone in the house and is unable to cope. There are some very effective moments of horror, such as when the mother wakes up at night to see child height figures walking past her door, then a menacing male figure lunges at her. There is a seance scene in which a sinister demonic voice threatens the psychic woman, with "Bitch, you filthy whore, I will rip your innards out" seen in writing, as she judders and screams. The scene continues as the little boy appears next to the people around the table, and they are flung about the room as evil spirits appear. The little boy is threatened by the demonic figure in a later scene when he is chased and grabbed as he tries to escape from it.

The film also contains one spoken and one very brief written use of strong language."

This is the very same company that gave MANHATTAN (no violence, no sex, only 1 or 2 F words) an 18s so I'd take their ratings advice with a pinch of salt.

    No they didn't.

IFCO did indeed give Manhattan an eighteen rating. So yeah, they can be a bit off at times. And occasionally a video store will put their own rating on a DVD.

    Are they the same cuts?

Note also that there are societal differences. In Spain, showing sex isn't a big problem, but showing marital infidelity is.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,731 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

I don't see any information that suggests there's a different cut, although the film will be dubbed almost everywhere here, negating any bad-languge issuses as I think you can say anythign you like in a 12s film.
