From having had a look around at photographers packages they usually start at around 450 depending on the expertise of the photographer and number of acronyms and letters after his name. The more in demand they are, the more likely they'll be expensive. Many are around 950 for DVD only...

Would you purchase a dress based on the price only? No, you'll buy one you like...
Take the same method when looking for your photographer. You should look around & see then styles of photography you like & take it from there.
You're not buying 'photos only on disc', you buying a skill talent! But Im sure some of the photographers on here can tell you more about that.
    Good luck!

Yes, 800-1000 is the going rate for a professional to take your shots. more amateur, (less professional? less experienced?) may/should do it for less, youll find someone if you have a budget for a photographer.

If your budget is zero, get a friend to do it as best they can or drop disposable cameras on the tables and ask for them to be returned in a bag at the end of the night. But you have no complaints about quality if you do this.

someone elses anecdotal stories about how someone got a friend to do it and was great can be offset by stories of others who got friends to do it and they weren't great. ie, you take your chances.

Yes clint - I am finding the 800-1000 range the norm for what we want bridal prep till first dance. might do the disposable cameras too - can get some nice shots more of your friends njoyin the evenin than a photographer would catch.
Also have a brother in law that is quite handy with a camera and said it to him in Jest that he could do it - He said nothin and yah shoulda seen his face - think he'd feel 2 much pressure so god love him dont want to stress him out.
Im more into the casual side of things and capturing the moments rather than shots with ever one lined up present and correct- finding this style hard to come across without paying a small fortune - oh its all fun and games!!! :D

Most photographers should be able to give you the style you're looking for if you ask. You dont even notice them at the time, they'll wear all all black just stay hidden in the corners and keep snappin away all day and night.

I'll give one recommendation for someone that sent shots on to our band after the event and I was very impressed. I have no connection other then having seen after wedding shots so cant comment on costs.

Hi pixierosa. Our budget was about same as you.. We didn't want a photog initially, was going to get a few friends, but then someone pointed out that in years to come, the photos will be the sole reminder of the day and it's tough to accommodate bad lighting, scenery, etc if unexperienced.

So we changed our minds and started looking. Some of our favourites which fit into this price range and who are lovely in person (we've met them and heard great things too) are Ronan Palliser, and Lilas photography.

They both have great blogs and were delightful to meet with :)

My advice is to find the one you want and then contact them and tell them what you are able to pay and see if they want it. You might just get lucky - we did :)

As bytheglass says, you are paying for their talent, expertise and the setup & taking of the photos. The cost of printing the photos is the least of the cost and requires none of the photographers skill - you can easily get that done yourself.

Finding a good photographer is more important than fining a cheap one. If he's cheap but no good, you may as well not bother. A good photographer can spot the right locations, position people in the right poses, make sure they are all looking and make them relaxed so you don't have forced smiles.

I agree 110% with getting a professional. As someone said, thats all you'll have left of the day in years to come.
I've been to 2 weddings where the photographer was a friend, and despite their technical abilities, they were very poor as wedding photographers. They need to have the experience in dealing with big groups to get a group of 100 people to do what you want, when you want and to be relaxed at the same time! Telling a group of people to stand in a particular spot is not enough - they need to be positioned so you can see everyone and not just a pair of eyes peaking out of someone elses shoulder's. Anyone can take great photos at a wedding... IF they are standing behind the professional who lined up the shot!

Disposable cameras are a nice idea, but they give poor quality photos especially indoors without good lighting, and in my experience people only use them after a few drinks so I'm sure the photos are bad drunken shots. But nearly everyone brings a camera to a wedding, so there will be lots of people to ask for their photos afterwards.

I second that... I've seen a few of the pics friends got from their disposable cameras, and most of them were of people messing at the table or on the dancefloor. They were fun pictures, but not something you'd end up making up a romantic wedding album.
