Is your laptop a toshiba model? Often happens when the laptop goes into sleep/hibernate mode cause you haven't enough power/battery sometimes is usually the case!? Sometimes it will turn off itself!? But it will loose its network regardless whether it goes into sleep/hibernate if their isn't enough power the laptop will turn off or restart itself. If there is enough power your network might still shut off cause of it having gone to sleep. It's not operating like so if its not in use the network will cut off sometimes if there isn't enough signal it might cut out too. Sometimes if your modem get's loose or a wire is loose your connection might get lost.

If the adapter/laptop overheats the fan will find it hard to keep going so the power is used up and its harder to keep the internet network not cut out. Is it a usb broadband connector you have or a wireless connection/WiFi/router/NIC card as your internet modem? There could be a fault maybe. You have an up to date WEP so can't see where the problem is from that point of view. You see if the save power is not clicked must mean something else is wrong, it could be your internet connection/phone line be at fault. It still shouldn't be doing that if you haven't clicked on the tick save power option.
