30kg allowance - what size case?

Having managed to travel with hand luggage only for years and years, I now need to invest in a suitcase to bring a lot of stuff to Australia. My weight allowance is 30kg so can anyone give me a rough idea of what size case I should get.

I know it all depends on what I'm packing and how I stuff it in so just a rough idea would be great.

I'll be packing mostly clothes, couple of sandles/shoes, usual toiletries and a hefty 17" laptop in a laptop bag and all it's accessories.

And am I right in thinking i don't have to put everything in 1 bag, I can split my stuff between 2 or more bags?

Im after buying this of ebay as im going to america and have a 50kg allowance. Probably would not fit 50kg into it but can check in two pieces. If your looking for dimensions of the bag the airline will have them on thier site, thier is a bigger bag on ebay but it was to long for the airline im using.

Thanks for that but I was thinking of somethiing a little more sturdy as the laptop will be in it! Though am having second thoughts about that now, I might get it into my hand luggage instead.

What do people usually do with the lappy? Would it be safe enough in the centre of a case full of clothes? Oh gawd, I'm thinking it'd be safer to carry it on.

You could buy some bubble wrap or something like that and put it in the middle of your clothes. It would be grand and would be much cheaper than buying a big suitcase

You would be crazy to bring the laptop in the checked luggage.Everyone brings their laptop on the plane with them .Buy a laptop bag ,maybe get one for 40 euro.30k is not that much really.What weighs the most is the toiletries .Its not the size of the case ,its whats inside the case that matters.

It's a heavy bugger allright!! Been checking out the Emirates website and there is no mention of weight restrictions on hand luggage, just dimensions, so might bring it on allright. It will fit in my small case. I'd be happier having it with me too.

Still not sure what size case to get for checked in luggage.

Get a rucksack, OP. At least then you'll know that your allowance is actually being used for your stuff and not your suitcase!

It would be insanity to pack your lappy, for one because the throwers don't care what's in your bags, they just chuck them onto/off the belts and the hold, but also because of the risk of theft. There are many threads here about travellers losing valuables they packed into their checked-in luggage.

What airline are you flying with and are you in First Class? Most airlines between Ireland and the US do not give a 50kg allowance unless maybe in first class, they do however give a 50lbs allowance which is around 22.5kgs. You sure your not mixing up pounds and kilos?, just a heads up incase you get a nasty surprise at the airport.

30kgs is the most allowance I've ever heard of an economy ticket getting and that is with Emirates.

yea i actually was mis reading it but its 50lb per bag so can take 46 kg in total. Its with continential btw

In general, Continental Airlines will accept up to two pieces of checked baggage with a maximum weight of 50 pounds (23 kg) per bag and a maximum outside dimension of 62 inches (157 cm) per bag in exchange for the applicable service fees.

Just double check that, I had to pay 80 dollars to check in a second bag. When I flew with them a few weeks ago I was only allowed to check in one bag, anything more and you have to pay!
