the 1st 12 holes are boring , 13-18 are really good , better courses out there for cheaper prices , IMO

I have probably played the Smurfit course maybe 100 times. I think its a fantastic course. Alot of players who would play the Palmer and then the Smurfit would go back to play the Smurfit.

Above post is wrong imo. Holes like 3,6,7,8,9,10 are all great holes. Good mix of long and short par 3's,4's,5's. It is a great risk/reward course. Perfect for matchplay.

The finish is up there with the best in the country.

16 is a long Par 4 with a big lake all down the left. There is a big bunker on the right. The approach is usually with a mid to low iron over water to a difficult green.

17 is a brute of a par 3. Think its like 190 slightly downhill over water to a difficult green.

18 is a classic risk reward par 5. You can cut the hole with your drive if you take on the water. If you judge this right and carry the ball about 240 over the water you will be left with a mid iron to the green. The green is an island green surrounded by water so anything long will be wet.

The greens are immaculate and the course is visually stunning. Beautiful bit of design imo.

Streets ahead of comparable courses like O'Meara, Monty, PGA Palmerstown, Druids Heath.

    Cost of green fees ?

Em not sure but pretty sure they have good deals for both courses at the minute. Def 100> euro I would say.

I think the OP would like you to mention these other courses rather than just give a one line generic answer guys. IMO these comments don't really help anyone too much.

not sure how far the OP is willing to travel , but The heritage , Headfort (new) are both under an hour from k club, both under €40 and especially headfort a cracking course , played the k club smurfit twice this year a friday and a sunday and both times the course was empty bar our group

I liked the Smurfit - though I was there on a complimentary, so had no value to judge.

It has a gentle opening, with wide fairways and nothing much punitive save for the bunkers. It cranks up as you enter the back 9, and then really hits superb highs and difficulty levels as you head towards home.

I dont think the front 9 is as weak as made out. It is a little open, and It pales in comparison to the back 9 - but most 9s in Ireland pale in comparison to Smurfit's back 9.

One of the other posters mentioned Headfort. And he's right. Headfort is a better course, so it doesn't make sense to pay more, let alone twice as much, to play Smurfit. But I don't think €60 would be a bad green fee on either course. Anything more than that and questions should be asked.

Rathcore, Macreddin, Concra Wood, Naas Golf Club, The Curragh, The Heritage. It all depends on your location and how far your willing to travel. Much better value out there than the KClubs two courses, regardless of their condition.

Killeen Castle have a monthly open and it costs about 50e i believe. Played it twice as a guest and found it very nice. The Solheim Cup will be played there next month too.
Baltray (Co. Louth) is a lovely course and not too expensive either. Its hard to beat either of Ballyliffin's two courses though.

which is about as relevant as the price of cornflakes.

Are you saying these are better courses than the Smurfit? If you are then you must be having a laugh. Only the Heritage on that list is in the same league.

Theres a difference between value and cheaper. I would think its better value to play the Smurfit for €90 than Naas for €25 for example. They are chalk and cheese.

the only fact I can derive from this is that you've never played Concra Wiod.

Take a buggy though as its very long and long walks from greens to tee-boxes too.

Played it in May and felt that it was in a terminal state of decline condition wise.
    Some quality holes though.

For 50/60 quid the kclub is well worth playing not sure is it worth much more than that it's a bit plain and open but there are some cracking holes as well.
Is it the Kclub thats in terminal decline or Concra Wood?

I'd imagine he is referring to Concra Wood. Outside of the course the place is quite rough around the edges, and I was somewhat surprised by that given it's reputation, when I played there earlier in the week.
The course doesn't suffer at all though in my opinion, which is what really matters. I haven't played the Smurfit but have played the Palmer and would take Concra Wood over that any day even if I did only manage 22 points on Tuesday. The wind was horrendous, does anybody know if the wind is usually up at Concra with the lake? It also seemed to be constantly in your face apart from maybe two or three holes. Can't wait to go back though. 10th is my second favourite hole ever I think after the 17th at Rosses Point.

Played both Concra Wood and Smurfit in the last 4 weeks and there is no comparison, Concra Wood is much nicer and in better condition. In fact any one who hasnt played CW make it your business - you wont be disappointed.

IMO Naas @ €25 would be the value

I'd pay €50 for any of these before I paid €90 for Smurfit. I agree with you that only The Heritage is in the same league... in terms of the quality of the grasses, tee boxes etc., but the other courses are a lot more fun to play.
