According to the Charlie Mulqueen in the Examiner last Tuesday, Padraig Harrington would need a top 15 place to get enough FedEx cup points to make the top 125.

He's going the right way about it, -3 after 11.

Two bogies in a row.. -1 after 13.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,082 ✭✭✭bigtimecharlie

Harrington still -1, which will move him to 125.

Casey and Ernie Els who are also outside the top 125 are making good progress.

    Casey -5, Els -4.

    Harrington in with 69(-1).

He seems to have been let down by his putting again as has happened several times this season so far. Both dropped shots involved par putts of less than 5 feet. He hit 83% of greens in regulation but took 32 putts. This was 4 more than Casey which was the difference in their overall score.

At his best, Padraig always had around 27/28 putts per round. He has hit the ball quite well tee to green in several events this year but not taken full advantage. Ironically, his short game stats were very good at Firestone recently when he really struggled with the long game.

Glad to see he played some tidy golf today. Maybe those tips from Pete Cowen are starting to work? 69 is no disaster, although it could have been a 66 or something like that.

Not sure it was all about the short stick though. His two bogies came on no.3 (way too short and right with his iron shot and then didn't get his bunker shot close enough to make the par putt) and no.4 (way too short and right with his iron shot and ended up leaving himself a 55 footer which he 3-putted). If he drained a few 20 footers I suppose it would've helped matters but looks like he needs to eliminate that short and right shot - probably a mental mistake which cost him twice today.

Fingers crossed for tomorrow and for the weekend. C'mon Paddy!

Harrington curently outside the cut at -1, starts the second round at 5:30pm (irish time).

Making the cut should be his priority and then worry about FedEx cup points.

A top 15 finish should do it.

Putter again letting Paddy down badly - 2 dropped shots early in the second round, 1st one just outside 4 feet and second just over 6 feet. Had a chance for an eagle but missed an 11 footer, got the tap in birdie. I followed his round yesterday and tee to green he is very solid but his putting performance over the last 13 holes has been horrendous, let’s hope he makes the weekend and sorts it out!

Anyone have any half decent stream?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,599 ✭✭✭matthew8

Harrington was in a position to make the cut but it changed to -3. Needs something to happen in the last 2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,599 ✭✭✭matthew8

As I typed that he birdied 17! Come on Padraig, let's make the weekend. 2 cuts in a row right now on the PGA tour is a nice way of getting back on track.

Harrington should make the cut thankfully. Anybody else notice his putter? He's using the new TaylorMade Ghost Spider. His putting must be in a bad state as he had that Odyssey Two ball for years.

Barring a big shift he has made the cut. A great round considering he bogeyed 2 of the first 4. 4 birdies from 5-18, birdieing 15 and 17, 15 for the second consecutive day. He finishes at -3, -2 for the day.

A very, very good sign. Making birdies when he really needs them. I honestly can't remember the last time he did that!

Good man Paddy. Another cut made. Now let the birdies roll in over the weekend

Interesting to see the club changes recently. Saw him hitting what looked like the R11 driver lately. Also noticed a new putter today.

I turned on the golf briefly last night and though I was looking at some 'celebrity' amateur or something... He certainly has a swing the likes of which can be seen on the first tee of many a GAA classic... made me feel worse when I then saw he was -7 with that swing and I couldn't shoot +7 and I'm surely way more elegant :D

He didn't bogey the first two holes today. He didn't birdie 17 on day 1. He was -2 for the day today.

Oops, the first 2 I got wrong, the last one was a typo. Shocking standards even for a hurried post.

ha, seriously though, he looks like hes LASHING at the ball with such a crazy swnig, feckin 12 under for the 2 days thought Who could critisize that? Must be a method to his madness :)

Alright guys what will Padraig need to be top 15? -8? -7? -6?

I'd say he'll need to shoot -8 over the weekend to get top 15(I read he needed top 13.) A big ask. Would like to see him do it.

Good on Tommy 2 Gloves! He couldn't win the Golf Channel's Big Break but he's having a great season with the big boys where it matters. His swing is definitely on the agricultural side.

I was hoping the guys on the tv would go through his swing but they didnt or i missed it? He also only hit 6 fairways today and still shot a 65 was it??! Seriously, how the fcuk is he doin it

He's been playing well all season. I'm sure they've covered his swing enough times. I've certainly seen them going through his swing countless times. The analysis has run it's course.

Harrington birdies the first, good man.

2 more pars for a solid start, -1 for the day after 3.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,599 ✭✭✭matthew8

3 bogeys after that, but he's back into it with 2 birdies on a back 9 which he has done well on the first 2 days.

EDIT: And he's back to under par for the day with another birdie.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,082 ✭✭✭bigtimecharlie

Harrington finished with a 69. +2 after 10 so 3 birdie's coming home all bode well. Just needs to eliminate bogies but at least no diasters on his 3 rounds so far.

He is 15 points outside current projected points so will need to be going low tomrrow, top 30 should do it.

Good birdie birdie start for harrington. -2 after 2 with another birdie chance on the 3rd. Now inside top125

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,599 ✭✭✭matthew8

God I wish I had a stream, the PGA tour's website has a good shot-by-shot coverage on the leaderboard though.

And he bogeys the 4th hole.

A magnificent 353 yard drive to the fairway on the par 5, 171 to the hole. I smell an eagle opportunity! He's hit every fairway so far.

Apart from the fact that he's Irish, what's the fascination with harrington? His game has gone to pot and it's showing no signs of returning.

As for the people in contention for this tournament I think Webb Simpson deserves to win a tournament soon, especially after the honesty he showed recently against Bubba Watson. He ripped up the last 6 or 7 holes yesterday and I can't see Tommy Two Gloves causing him any trouble. Only someone coming from behind with a 63 or 64 will stop our born again christian friend.

Well mainly because he's the greatest ever Irish golfer and he won 3 majors. I don't foresee him winning another but he's he best player in the republic right now.

And he's -2 for the day going into his favourable back 9, -6 total. 3 more birdies and I think he should make it into the cup.

Go on Padraig, a birdie on the 10th.

Ah yes, the FED EX play offs.

Sorry I was just wondering why the fascination with him when he was so far down the leaderboard. Forgot about those

Even as it stands, he will do well to qualify. Just inside the top 125 and most of the field to finish. All he can do is post a score and hope that its enough.

Paul Casey is outside the top 125 and if he posts a good score, he could push Harrington out.

    Ernie Els should hold on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,599 ✭✭✭matthew8

Harrington with a 90% driving accuracy, very good. Hopefully he can pick up 1 or 2 birdies in the last 5, which have been good to him. The PGA tour play-by-play really is excellent when you don't have streams.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,082 ✭✭✭bigtimecharlie

Only a par on the par 5 15th, second into greenside bunker.

Oh dear Padraig, he had a 4 ft putt on hole 15 for birdie and he missed it. 3 holes left, -7.

And he bogeys the 16th, he really needs a birdie on one of the last 2.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27 KKmanok

Yea play by play is really excellent - I've been following Paddy since Thursday and he has left so many short putts out there and now he has done it again missing a 4 footer for birdie on the esay Par 5 - This is a trend i have noticed with Paddy for over a year now... so unlike the Harrington of pre 2010, not surprised he has changed his putter, he had to do something!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,082 ✭✭✭bigtimecharlie

Follows up with a 3 putt bogey on 16th, back to -2 for today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,082 ✭✭✭bigtimecharlie

Finished with a 68 for 4 rounds in the 60's. He can't complian about that. 1 month ago there would have been a 73 or worse in there.

However, I can't see that being enought to play in the barcleys next week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,835 ✭✭✭Golfgraffix

However, I can't see that being enought to play in the barcleys next week.

Projected at 124 right now, he may be lucky

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,082 ✭✭✭bigtimecharlie

For Harrington to play in the Barcleys next week:

    1. Danial Summerhayes currently in 5th position and projected 147 in FedEx cup. Hopefully he dosn't improve to gain more points which will see hime leapfrog Harrington.

    2. Paul Casey, Justin Leonard and Tim Petrovic not to improve their positions ahead of Harrington, even hope that they fall back. They all are -9 after about 4 holes currently.

    3. Cammilo Vallages can only fall back to 125 in the FedEx cup. So if he fall back then Harrington will improve further.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,063 ✭✭✭Adiaga 2

His projected FEC position is 124 as things stand. From what I can tell, Paul Casey, Justin Leonard, Jason Bohn, Tim Petrovic and possibly Aron Price and Joe Durant have Harrington's(and their own) 2011 FedEx Cup future in their hands. All very complicated and that's just my interpretation of it.

    edit: Summerhayes too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,599 ✭✭✭matthew8

He's down to 125 and has to hold that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,599 ✭✭✭matthew8

And Harrington has qualified for the fedex cup.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,082 ✭✭✭bigtimecharlie

Well done to Harrington, should build on this.

By the way, Webb Simpson won.
