MacBook Air and SuperDrive

I am looking to buy an 11 inch MB Air in the next few weeks as a secondary computer - mostly online activity, some word processing - and am wondering about the external SuperDrive.

Can another type of external CDR/W be used with the MBA or does it have to be an Apple product? I may need to connect the MBA only once to install Office and do not want to splash out to use it once.

In that case you should check out Remote Disc, where you can borrow the drive of another computer just for a bit, if you only need to use it the once.

I believe any external USB DVD drive could be used. I've personally used an external USB HP drive to install windows in Bootcamp. Its the only time I've ever required an optical drive for the Macbook Air.

To install office you can download a trial from the microsoft website and just enter the code you get with the cd.

I bought the superdrive as my new MBA is going to be my sole computer and I plan on watching DVD's on it other than that I don't know if I would have bought it.

I bought the SuperDrive with my Air but don't think it was a wise purchase as it will get so little use. I have a few DVDs I haven't watched yet. Physical media is in the last gasps of a dying technology though.

I was in the U.S. recently and visited the local Apple Store where there was a guy looking to buy the SuperDrive for his new MBA and the Apple sales clerk was trying to talk him out of it, offering to convert the MS Office disc to an image file and giving it to the guy on a USB key but no joy. He also pointed out that there was an external Blu-Ray drive available in another store which worked out cheaper than the SuperDrive and was somewhat more future-proof. The customer insisted on buying the SuperDrive because he wanted a drive to match the style of the MBA.
