wasps nest in the ground

I discovered a wasps nest in the ground in my OH's parents garden. We went out straight away to buy the powder that you put down to kill them off (the garden is used a lot by the grandkids so they can't have a wasps nest where the kids can reach it). While we were out his mother got stung by a wasp in the garden, got annoyed and went and put a rock over the enterence to the nest. This seems to have stopped the wasps but we're worried they're just going to dig a new enterence from underground. We also don't want to move the rock to put down powder because there will be a lot of pi**ed off wasps under it.
How long will it take them to die out if they're trapped? It's a horrible way for them to have to die (that said, the powder isn't much better, just quicker) but we don't know what else to do

Wasps are vermin IMO and are a real hazard to small children. I would soak an old dry rag in petrol and place it into the hole and light it. That is a good way of destroying the wasps' nest and eradicating the wasps too.

That's not really true tbh. Wasps are actually the opposite to vermin, being creatures that prey on pests. if you leave wasps well enough alone they'll leave you alone.

There are professionals for hire that will do pest removal, a good deal safer than 'throwing a modified petrol bomb at one and hoping you don't set your garden/self alight.

is the original poster entirely sure it is a wasps nest, it is unusual for them to nest in the ground.

The op said kids play in the garden, i certainly wouldnt be takin a chance of leavin a wasps nest there anyway!

OP i agree with the petrol and lighter comment, that or maybe try a can of the spray foam nest killer first! Try get a video if you do it yourself:D
