Overdue NCT this week & next NCT next week

    Hi,

My NCT is overdue (yes, by 2 years) and I'm booked to get it done this Friday. However, I just got my new tax disc & it says that the next NCT is due the following week. Is there any way that I can combine the 2? It seems daft to get a car done 2 weeks in a row.

    Advice please.

Can you explain that again? How did you tax the car without a valid NCT & how did you know from the tax disc that the NCT is due the following week?

    I stand corrected!

You don't need a valid nct to tax a car,

With regard to the backdating, Im not sure what way it will work, a friend of mine tested his car a while back and only got 2 months test because of the time elapsed.

Id say it will depend on what the tester does/says?

    1. There's no need for NCT to tax a car.

    2. On motor tax renewal form which you get in post, there is NCT due date stated. (just a remainder). - probably a new thing as I've seen it only recently.

OP you don't have to combine anything
Your NCT due date is next week, so you will get it for a year or 2 (depending on vehicle age) from the due date which is next week.
Period of last 2 years is to be forgotten now.

If what you are saying is true, than it means that he got screwed.
You can do test 90 days before due date, no matter if previous test was done or not. If he only got 2 months (60 days) it means he should have got a disc for a 2 months and 2 years (eventually 2 months and 1 year in case car was over 10 years old).

It's not up to the tester. It's regulated by legislation.

I taxed my car recently after it had been off the road & i had to put my NCT number on the form. Is it a part thats not necessary to fill out so? I just presumed.

& good man i hadnt spotted that. ;)

I never had any problem taxing the car. I called the NCT a year ago saying that I'd never got an NCT reminder on my tax form. They said they'd send something and they never did.
Car was taxed for another year & ended up in the UK for 10 months, so I didn't follow it up. I called them again in May and the nearest date they gave me for a test was this Friday. Then, I get a letter saying my 2nd NCT is due on the 26th ... but I'd never even done the first one. AND the NCT know I havent done the first one because the sent me a reminder about getting it done in June.

It's pretty confusing at best :)
I'll be delighted if I get a cert this Friday that will last me 2 years.. but I'm not optimistic

There is no part asking for NCT number.
There is part asking of certificate of worthiness number, and that applies only to commercial vehicles which instead of being NCT'ed are DOE'ed.

All is explained in RF100a form manual (overleaf the form).

You are brave man to drive a car - especially abroad - without valid test.

But answering your question - you don't have to be optimistic. You have to get a cert for 2 years (or 1 if car is 10 years or over). If they at NCT give you cert for shorter, don't accept it as it's against the law. Just ask for what you are entitled to.

    Probably so, I agree.

Ive heard (anecdotally) of other cases of this happening, where the tester stated that the car was due on **/**/** (date of registration + whatever due year was) and had to be tested from that date forward, b8llocks in my opinion but, thats what happened. and said people got less than a years nct.
