could be breaking the rules so I will apologise in advance if I am.

Going to the physio tomorrow and am trying to gauge what my expectations should be.

I'm having pain either side of my knee when going up and down stairs. Will get the odd pain when running but nothing constant and can play 5 a side soccer without any effects.

I'm training for the marathon and am worried that there could be something bad gone wrong with my knee.

Am I naive by thinking it can't be too bad considering I only get the pain around the side of the knee and not in the centre of it?

A trip to the physio during marathon training is pretty common, but it is worthwhile making sure that you've got a good physio that understands running. There's another active thread at the moment about finding a good physio - definitely worth looking into.

As for your symptoms, pain is bad and you're right to act on it. The fact that it's on the outside (and not the inside) of the knee doesn't mean a thing. The key things in recovering quickly are (i) going to the physio before you do much damage (ii) doing whatever exercises your given and (iii) not rushing back too early and ending up back on square 1.

Mod: Afraid that gauging an injury is still looking for injury advice so I am going to have to lock the thread. Sounds like a fairly common injury that a few experience however wait and see what your physio has to say. One day wont make or break you;)
