Huge Badger

I was going to work yesterday morning in Laois and came across a dead badger on the road, it was a monster, the biggest I have ever seen or even heard about.
I went up the road to turn around and go back and pick up the beast to measure it then get it stuffed, but someone got there before me.
Just wondering if anyone came across him as I would be interested to know how big it was or get a pic of it.

I came across a small kangaroo or wallaby (no expert) out near kildangan in kildare last year, I should have picked that up but couldent believe my eyes and was in a hurry.
So has anyone come across any other unusual creatures on your travels, hunting or otherwise.

no its not illegal. thats how most people get things to be stuffed. i got a pine martin a while ago. getting it stuffed just contacted the wildlife ranger and he comes to look at it and make sure it wasent shot or killed any other way then naturally or car.

Could of been picked up by a polish dude... I've been asked by a couple of them to get them a badgers gallbladder as they make some traditional cure from it ... they were offering €80 for it.

It's not illegal to pick up a dead animal on the roadside that has been knocked down.

The problem can arise if you want to get it mounted and it's a protected species.

N.P.W.S. Ranger is respondsible for monitoring taxidermists in his / her area and ensuring everything mounted is legally obtained. As protected cannot be shot the only way of obtaining one is a roadside kill.

Unfortunately, some unscrupulous hunter could shoot a protected species and claim it's a roadkill. In another situation the same could happen but they may only wound the target and it could fall dead on the side of the road from it's wounds......where some innocent person finds it and wants to get it mounted.....therein lies the problems for the Ranger.

Most Rangers are okay with it if you actually saw the bird/animal being hit & killed by vehicle - it's black & white that it was a road caualty. If you just come along and find it dead then some Rangers may not be happy with that and may not give the go-ahead......it's the taxidermist that will get an earful, not you!

The taxidermist must keep a log of all protected species which are mounted (which is checked annually by the Ranger before reissuing the Wildlife Dealer's Licence) and will want details of person who handed it in (this includes crows, magpies, rooks, jackdaws, pigeons etc....all protected species).

If a protected species is handed in as a roadkill & the taxidermist finds shotgun pellets / bullet wounds etc. when skinning he/she must immediately stop, freeze it and contact the Ranger, supplying the persons details.

If you see a species being knocked down take the reg., take a photo of the species dead on the road with your phone & detail of anybody with you / witnessed it.....can help your case if wishing to get it mounted.

There was some polish guys (well a PL number plate on their car) were building a wall right beside where the badger was on the road and badger gone within 5 minutes.
This was a huge beast, you would have to see it to believe it

Males can be over 10kg and they really pile on the fat between now and winter
