I paid more for my netbook and had to buy a better battery at additional cost.

You can max out the ram on these things (2gb I believe) for maybe €20-25.
Good enough for light use, which is what netbooks are for.

Well if it's expandable the I'd say it's a great deal. you can almost get away with 1gig in windows 7 anyway but the hdd has to do alot of paging which makes multitasking a nightmare.
Updates and virus scanning will require the systems full attention which can be a real pain in the arse.

Does a MacAir have a crappy atom chip too? I've had a few machines with same chip and it's damn slow.

Macbook Air uses the i5 or i7 core processor..

Indeed it is but the OP's point was that he could point to a sub €300 laptop 'as good as' a Mac Book Air. He failed on that.

Completely different ballpark as mentioned; this is a netbook, the air is a full-powered ultra portable laptop.

But for an asus E series netbook with 8cell battery, excellent price.

How would you go about that?

what type of ram is in this and where would you get it?

I haven't checked any reviews, but that is a very good price

    +Decent little dual core processor
    +Insane battery
    +Surprisingly large harddrive
+Asus eee range are generally good/refined

-1 gig of ram, I wouldn't expect more for that price, but with ram so cheap right now, would cost 15 or 20 euros to get more ram

There are 1011px's around the same price but feature a single core processor and smaller HDD.

    Ram - 2 gigs - 16 sterling

    Could maybe find it cheaper

I absolutely despise Apple products and the cult of fanboi-dom that the company inspires, but that Asus Netbook is not even remotely close to a MacBook Air - it's spec's absolutely trounce it in every way that matters and to suggest that an Atom powered machine with 1GB of RAM with a mechanical hard drive is in any way shape or form comparable to an i5 powered machine with twice the RAM and a solid state drive is glaringly misleading.

The Asus is a Netbook. Macbook Air: much closer to Ultrabook territory. To give a real world example - there are several people in this office who do their everyday software development work on their Macbook Air's but no one is perverse or mad enough to try it on a netbook :D

All that said, the Asus is an excellent price, but given that a lot of the regulars here on Bargain Alerts may not be as technically clued in as nerds like me, it's important to clarify that you're not comparing like with like here at all.
