    Hi,

I ran Monolingual today and lost my keyboard. (MS Office isn't working either but I'll deal with that later). I can't type anything in. I downloaded the keyboard bundle but I can't install it because I need to input my password, which I can't. I don't have the install disk although I do have the .dmg on my hard drive but I can't make my usb a start up drive for the same reason.

I tried pacifist but that needs a password too.

    Any ideas?????

    Thanks in advance.

You haven't stated your hardware or OS version. It's essential to have an installation disc.

"Barn Door" advice: DON'T run any form of "clean up" software on a Mac that is "mission critical".

Snow Leopard. I've managed to burn it from a dmg I had but when I got to install I need to put the the password in.

You are correct about the clean up and since I've had the problem I've read countless websites that have issued a warning but on the other hand why does Monolingual do this? There's no point. The file is only 1.8MB. I know I told it to by clicking ok but why offer to delete an essential file? It's ok for people 'in the know' to deselect it but those of us who just read the product page don't expect it.

You don't need a password. There is an option in the installer menu to create a password or something like that.

If you've access to another Mac on the same network, you could try screen sharing. It'll need to be enabled in Sys Prefs, but hopefully it already has been!

What do you mean you lost your keyboard? Is it wireless?

There's a lot of bad experiences with Monolingual on MacUpdate. Although I don't see how it is responsible for your keyboard not working when booted from the install disc. If it's a bluetooth keyboard, have you tried re-pairing it with your Mac? See here. If not, have you tried booting from the install disc while holding c on startup? If the keyboard is wired or successfully paired it should work regardless of the problems caused by Monolingual.

Also, do you have a Time Machine backup, OP? If so you should be able to restore to an earlier state quite easily.

Thanks for the help folks, I appreciate it. I took the opportunity to upgrade the HDD instead. I couldn't re-install from the disk without the password. I have an old external enclosure in my dads place that I can use to get the photos off etc. I'll format that then and make it my time machine disk.

I do only have myself to blame but I still think as a (free) consumer product Monolingual should not be so destructive. Just put the features in an advanced tab with a warning.
