Weak saorview in the evenings.

Am hoping someone can help me out. Am home visiting the folks for a few weeks and they just (2 days ago) got a new Samsung LED TV with Saorview built-in. As I've been away from Ireland I've not been really following all the latest on this so please bear with me.

The basic problem is that the Saorview channels are all breaking up in the evening. From my reading of these forums it appears it's to do with the current weather. Is that right? They are all ok during the day. So maybe the aerial is not quite right?

I had a quick look on the soarview website and after entering my address (skerries) it says I should be getting the signal from the Kippure transmitter. I've no real way of knowing if this if the aerial is actually pointing to that. I do know that all Irish and UK stations on analogue are fine. We are picking up the UK signal from Northern Ireland.

Short of calling someone out to have a look to possibly move the aerial is there anything I should do first myself?

    Thanks,

    Paul

You will be getting your signal from Clermont cairn and not Kippure,High pressure plays havoc with the signal in the town here even loosing it at times.
If you turn the aerial to point at Kippure or Three rock you will loose all your English channels.
One solution would be to get a second aerial and set it for the Dublin transmitters and combine the two.
Or wait till switchover and everything will be sorted out and on full power transmitter wise.
    Hope this helps.

The aerial is more than likely pointed at Clermont Carn (Saorview on UHF channel 53) & the same aerial is probably receiving the NI channels.

Did you move the pointer on the map to your exact location? It may show Clermont as your preferred transmitter.

Coverage from there doesn't seem to be great atm (there was a thread here a short while back) but if you have this single-aerial setup, you'd lose the NI analogue & possibly degrade the ROI analogue if you realign it for Kippure/Three Rock.

Interesting that signal on my Sony idtv has improved from Clermont Carn over last few weeks and I'm living well north of the transmitter. (Moira - some 17 miles from Belfast).

Thanks all. Comments about the Clermont Carn transmitter make sense. The saorview site says the aerial from our address should be pointed at Kippure but as you all said, we would loose the UK channels.

Think we will just leave it for now and wait til the switchover takes place (and am sure the high pressure won't last for long so it should be ok). Then sort out a freest solution for the UK channels when they get switched off.

    Thanks.

When the analouge gets switched off in the north and all the transmitters go live you should get the english stations on freeview from Kilkeel where you now get your english stations from at the moment.

. . . provided the dreaded Mt. Leinster doesn't intervene, as Kilkeel will share channels.

Ah, I did see the UK freeview channels briefly the other day. It would solve a lot of issues if it worked out but I guess we won't know for sure until the end of next year...

Hi...just wondering as now July 2012 does anyone else in Skerries area get intermittant Saorview. Perfect picture alot of time but occasionally breaks up. Pointing to Clermont Carn.

Do you think these issues should be resolved with switchover, as I guess the transmitter power will be ramped up?

    Thanks,
    Ian.

The Saorview coverage checker indicates coverage in the Skerries area from the end of Oct - http://www.saorview.ie/make-the-switch/coverage-map/
