From improver to "swimmer"

This may be a "how long is a piece of string question" but anyway here goes. I have started 1 to 1 swimming lessons some time ago. I am not a beginner, most definitely in the improver category. However improver means I can make it from one width of the pool to the other: leg and arm technique not all bad, breathing technique awful, atually make that non existent (I just keep my head down:o). Also I am not entirely comfortable in deep water and tend to hug the wall for the length of the lesson. My question is at what stage do you make the leap from improver to "swimmer"? Im not thinking of giving up yet but I feel that I may be approaching a wall in terms of my progression and don't have any hope of getting beyond the scrappy technique I have at the moment. My question is this; does every swimmer have a "breakthrough" moment where everything falls into place or is the progression more gradual? I really want to improve to the extent where I can find myself at ease and not struggle to make it 12m down the pool and find myself exhausted. Is it a case of for some, depsite effort and fitness levels we are not built to be swimmers:(?

Im just wondering what other peoples experiences are (or were) at this level?

I am in the beginner category myself only started getting lessons in January so I know what you mean. I never had a understanding before I started of just how technical swimming is. There are so many things that need to click before you can glide through the pool like so many of the fish you see doing the laps. It requires you to master so many aspects and then do them all in unison.

For me the breathing was key as once I started to not panic about being out of breath you just kinda get a rhythm going and can plod along now.

I would say that my stroke, legging kicking etc is complete pants but I can do a good few laps now without passing out which is progress.

So keep at it, will eventually click took me about 6 months about 3 times per week. As I said in my first post went sea swimming for the first time since I was a kid the other day and that really is the fun part forget going up and down in a straight line in a pool what I want to be able to do is swim a comfortable kilometre in the waves great stuff altogether.

I will probably go back for more lessons in the winter to correct all those bad habits and then next summer it will be sea swimming all the way fingers crossed
