Question on missing/abandoned dogs

    Hi!!!

I was wondering if there is a place in Dublin (possibly south side as I live in Bray) where missing/abandoned dogs are kept and whether it is possible to volunteer to take them for a walk from time to time?
I love dogs and always had a dog when I was kid/teenager, but now I spend a lot of time abroad during the year for work and live in an apartment, so don't have the possibility to keep one without a proper garden :( , but as time allows I would be happy to help out missing/abandoned dogs and take them for a walk. Any suggestion?

    Thank you! :)

The dogs from that area go to Dunboyne Pound I think, which is in County Meath.

Ashton pound in Finglas allows volunteers to walk the dogs though, and it really helps the dogs to cope with the stress of being in a pound.

Thank you! Dunboyne is actually very far from Bray. I am pretty sure there are Pounds a bit closer in South Dublin?

No, unfortunately not, as I explained, dogs from South Dublin go to the pound in Dunboyne. That is the pound that has the contract with that council.

Would you think about fostering? So long as you are around to walk them you don't really need a garden once you are matched with the right dog. You can hand them back if your going abroad for work and you still get to help abandoned dogs.

    Zapperzy, you read my mind!
OP, I run a rescue and have no problem rehoming dogs to people living in apartments, or fostering dogs out to people in apartments, as long as they're ready for the bit of extra work it'll entail getting the pooch out for toilet breaks, walks etc, and as long as it's the right dog. Lots of rescues would feel the same way about it as I do, and let's face it, good fosterers are worth their weight in gold to a rescue, whether they've a garden or not!
You would typically have the dog for 2-4 weeks, so that he/she can be neutered, vaxed etc and recover whilst with you, and the input you can give about the dog's personality and foibles is really valuable for a rescue to be able to then place the dog in the right home.
    Is this something you'd consider?:)

What about the DSPCA in Rathfarnham? They are always looking for volunteers to help care for the dogs, you can sign up through the website I think.

Unfortunately in the apartment complex where I live pets are not allowed :( ....another problem would be that both my wife and myself are working all day, so at present even if I was allowed to keep a dog it would be at home on its own most of the day. That's why I was looking for pounds where I can go, walk the dog for 1-2 hours and take him back....
I will try and contact DSPCA in Rathfarnham :)
