Apologies €2200 is the total amount not 3000 as stated.

I have been doing a fas training course the past 6 months and made sure that my cwo and local office were aware so that something like this would not happen. While on the course I received a training allowance.

Now suddenly my 90 euro rent supplement dropped to 20 euro and i am told I will owe a back payment for the past 6 months!!!! I start a new partime job next week (thanks to my new training) and I would actually be better off now if I dnt work .. in fact the cwo actually agreed with that statement and tol dme its up to me to choose. I will ofcourse choose the work as I have a young family and want badly to get off benefits. But can they really go after this money????? And leave me in the *hit for there cock up?

What else is the back payment being sought on, as the rent supplement back payment should only amount to around €1700 by my maths.

OOOPS I should rectify that. It should of said 2200 as they are taking a further 20euro from y regular payment.

Did you have an overpayment before this overpayment?

no they just said i should of been docked in my rent and sw when i started getting training allowance as its viewed as income. where as when i first told them they said it wouldnt effect my benefits.

So now 6 months later and on last week of training I get 80 + 20 deduction they tell me it should of been deducted from begining of course now.... and so I owe them. They have yet to decide how to make these further deductions.

Well while you were on the fas training course you should not have been paid sw. I cant understand why you were overpaid sw as if you did not sign on your payment would have been suspended after a couple of weeks. Best advice is if you notified sw before going on fas course is to appeal this decision and the same if you notified community welfare officer.

Did you keep signing on while you were at FAS?Did you send them in details of the course or just tell them at a signing date?

    This doesn't make sense.

As others have said, if you were doing a FAS training course and informed SW and the CWO, then your existing SW payment should have been replaced with a FAS training allowance. This training allowance is usually equivalent to the maximum rate of SW appropriate to you (open to correction on this). http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/education/vocational_education_and_training/fas_training_programmes_and_supports/fas_training_allowances.html#l9e49a

The only thing that I can think of is that you were on a reduced SW payment (possibly due to means or age).

You say that you want to get off benefits because you have a young family. Is your OH working, getting a SW payment?

OP - can you please post how much you were getting on the FAS training allowance and your previous SW payment. Also it would be handy if you posted about your family circumstances (spouse, partner, kids).

Sorry to be so intrusive but it would help when trying to figure out what's happened. PM if you prefer.
