Changing Courses

Hi, I just got my leaving cert results and I've fallen short about 30 points of what I needed for my first choice. I had Irish studies high up on my cao so I'm fairly certain that I'll get offered that- unless the points change dramatically. Anyway, I've heard about how students change courses after the first while and I was wondering if it'd be possible to go from Irish studies into a tsm. I'd love to do Modern Irish and Classical Civilisations. Anyway, I was just wondering if there was a rule that you can only change into a different tsm if you're already doing some other tsm course already.
I'd really like to know asap, because otherwise it'd probably be better for me to go to UCD.
    Thank you :)

...either the admissions office or the SU education officer (www.tcdsu.org). I think officially you would have to do a course transfer and there's a deadline for that so best get on it sooner rather than later.

As far as I know, if you've got the points, the entry requirements, and there's enough room, you can switch into most courses, regardless of what you're switching from. Provided you do it within the first few weeks that is.
I know a few people who switched into science from completely random courses and vice versa, so I don't think going from single honours to tsm would matter. However the transfer might not be immediate, you may have to wait for enough people to drop out before you can officially join the course.

Anyway I've never been through the process myself so I could be wrong here. You're best to contact admissions and ask them yourself.

You would need to have the points for the course you want to transfer into, and for there to be space on the course.

If you have TSM as your CAO first choice and you aren't offered it because you don't have enough points, then you cannot transfer into it once you are in Trinity. However, if the Modern Irish/Class Civ combination turns out to be lower points than what you have, then fire away.

Secondly, don't underestimate the likelihood that there simply won't be space on a course. A lot of Trinity courses are quite small, and there won't be a space within a couple of weeks; I know, because I tried to move in my first year (between two humanities courses) and couldn't, because the course I wanted was full. So be careful.

Yeah second to gutenbergs comment, don't accept Irish studies just so you can transfer over. I accepted a course I didn't really want in first year in the hopes I'd get a transfer once I got there and ended up having to drop out because the course was full. Serious backfire! :P

If you're going to do it just be prepared that you might have to do Irish studies or else drop out. But also bear in mind you'll be offered your higher preference on the CAO, so if you won't be able to take UCD if you are offered Irish studies.
