    Hi all,

First of all excuse my lack of knowledge on plumbing. I viewed a house recently that had solar panels on the garage roof and had the cold water tank along with the gas boiler with the hot water tank in the garage. The garage is about twenty feet from the house.

My question is does this sound like an inefficient set-up? As the hot water has to be pumped to the house and potential heat loss along the way are you going to have higher heating and electricity bills compared to the set-up being in the house? At the moment the garage is uninsulated so this could cause problems in the cold weather? Would a person be waiting for longer than normal for the hot water to reach the tap?

Would it be considered crazy to move everything in the garage to the utility room(it can accommodate this) or would the cost involved of doing this rule out any such move as the solar panels would have to be moved as well. The roof on the house above the utility room is south facing.

    Thanks for reading this,
    Gunth.

Depends. If they used zero loss pipe between the house and the garage I would let it be, if not, I would dig it up and replace. It is expensive though so get a price before signing.

i wired up same system for my mate. hes a plumber and done all the plumbing himself but last winter a pipe burst in the garage. as regards the hot water he has some sort of pump on the system to pump it in quickly....
