WHY ARE CAVAN AND ROSCOMMON SO BAD?

I cant understand why these counties in particular are so bad at gaa, they are just football mad and are one trick ponys, its not as if they have other sports competing or anything, ok cavan have tradition but thats a long time ago, and ross had a fairly decent team in the late 70s, and dont give the population excuse, offaly have won both hurling and football titles in the past 30 years with a tiny population, new zealand can beat england at rugby with 1/20th of englands population, because they only concentrate on one sport, similar to the likes of cacan and ross and football,

Meath have only won 2 more all irelands than cavan.... Meath didnt do much better than Roscommon this year. I fail to see your point

Are you the same Millhouse that posted this score prediction on hoganstand kerry 5-16 mayo 1-8?

Cavan are the current U21 & Minor Ulster champions while Roscommon are the Connacht minor champions with a Semi final to play this Sunday not too bad IMO.

cavan are ulster under 21 champions and got to this years all-ireland final, they are also current ulster minor champions

roscommon won the connacht senior title last year, won the under 21 connacht last year, current connacht minor champions

yes new zealand have a small population but you failed to mention they have the entire pick of all the southsea islands as well....

just because a county is football mad doesn't mean a good team will just appear out of thin air, i can't speak for cavan but our problems in roscommon are well documented, we had a very talented bunch of lads around the turn of the century who thought partying and playing naked pool was better craic than winning matches, our county board was a joke who accumulated millions in debt only to be helped out by a local businessman, our choice of managers prior to o'donnell was nothing short of a diaster, john maughan had zero interest in managing roscommon, after one heavy defeat he rushed back to mayo to commentate on one of their games..

i know we will never match the kerrys of this world, we simply don't have the pick they do or the standard of club football, but one or two provincial titles and a win finally in croke park in the senior championship in the next 5 years would be nice

we might not garner the same mystic in gaelic football as the dublins, corks, downs, tyrones (recently), galways and meaths of this world but roscommon are still to this day the ONLY county to have beaten kerry in all ireland final at every level (minor, senior, under 21 and junior)

I find it very strange having to consider the Cavan Senior team as "small fry". When I first was introduced to Gaelic Games they were a very good side, which spiked in 1997. For a short period afterwards, the endured a downward trajectory of sorts, but nothing too alarming. In recent years they have gone completely off the boil, and would currently rank amongst the poorest Senior Inter County Sides in the Country. Their under-age teams will give them a major lift, but it remains to be seen whether that will translate

At hurling, they are football's answer to Kilkenny. Enough said.

Roscommon have developed in football and hurling(not giant strides, but they have performed well) in recent years, and I think the OP is rather unfair to them, especially considering their youthfulness.

If Roscommon can get their underage talent coming through as well as they are doing at underage level they be decent side in few years.

Cavan I dont know seem to be on slide to slide for while. Again had good year underage but still not sure I saw many standouts in u21 final..

also to say that your only choice is gaelic football in roscommon is completely incorrect, two of our best young players from 2008-09 jack carty and daniel qualter are both now professional rugby players with the buccaneers club and ireland under 20 internationals, both were standouts for our under 16s in 2008 who won the ted webb and came within a whisker of beating kerry in the minor quarters in 2009, qualter would have walked into the current roscommon senior panel and imo would have been one of the best midfielders in the county by his early 20s

Yeah. Especially since he plays second row.

The one thing that gives me cheer in all of that talk is that the Aussie rules agents didn't tempt Donie Shine over, given he beat Tommie Walsh out of the park in the 2006 minor final and replay and probably is more naturally gifted than Walsh. We've been pretty lucky overall in that we've not had a huge amount of defections for the top notch minor teams we've had coming through the past half decade.

Wow. Bit embarrassed to share a county with the OP. Seriously, where to begin?
