I just want to get this off my chest.

Ive being unemployed for a year and 2 weeks today. Ive being through jobfit, talked to FAS, being on plenty of interviews and still nothing. Things are so bad Ive let FAS convince me to sign up to a back to work course which is due to start next month... and for the next 2 months after that Im going to learn how to type, how I should act at work, what way to dress, telephone skills, how to be polite etc...

What does FAS think we are... savages or something?? Im gonna go crazy on that course, I might aswell be getting a course on how to brush my hair and eat my dinner. Oh my god I cant believe times are so bad. Im so depressed sitting around Im really thinking of going to the doctor for some anti-depressants. I get up every morning at 8am, have breakfast, go down to FAS... find out that they only have 2 or 3 new jobs since yesterday and only maybe 1 job every second or third week that you dont need expereience or qualifications for. Then I come back home and sit around for the rest of the day. Then go to bed, get up the next day, go to FAS, come back and have another day of sitting around reading boards and watching tv. Im going to go crazy.

Why don't you volunteer with a charity or a community group? It will take your mind off your own problems when you see there are other people a lot worse off. You can try www.volunteeringireland.ie for some ideas.

Also, why are you giving out about the FAS course if you are so bored? I would have thought you would be delighted for something to do?

You are doing the right thing getting out of bed and going down to FAS every day. You might think it is a waste of time but something will eventually turn up.

And don't dismiss the FAS course that you signed up for. It will give you something to do and, if you give it a chance, you WILL learn something.

And don't forget, not all the jobs in the country are advertised in FAS. Check the papers, online etc. Apply, apply, apply. Don't be disheartened, something will eventually turn up.

You will also interact with other peopel which can only be a good thing.

There is no disadvantage to doing it in my book

... find out that they only have 2 or 3 new jobs since yesterday and only maybe 1 job every second or third week that you dont need expereience or qualifications for.

If the job hunting isn't going well, why not use the time to get the qualifications that would help get that foot in the door. It would give you something to do as well as something else to put on your CV.

    All the best.

    Hi OP!

I'd definitely suggest volunteering! It's very attractive on a CV if you can show that you've been dedicated and committed to a local charity or volunteer group for a period of time. If you're willing to be that dedicated for free employers will be assured you'll be dedicated in a job! It can also show that you :
are good at working in teams
are good at working towards common goals
    have good interpersonal skills
    are hard working
are an active member of your community
are good at taking initiative and generating new ideas (if you're involved in fundraising etc.)

These are all skills employers will look for! Working with a charity or volunteer organisation is also brilliant to have on a CV because it gives you something to talk about in your interview if you have little or no experience in the area your potential job is in. You can keep relating back to your previous work with charity and show how the skills you displayed then can be applied to the position for which you are applying.

Volunteering is also a great thing to do when you're unemployed because it gets you out and about, meeting people and working towards something. It can help you make friends and contacts (through whom you may find a job) but also allows you to do something practical, positive and useful for yourself and others! :)

    Hi op here.

I was really pee'd off yesterday when I wrote that. Feeling a lot better today. I slept on the idea and now I am actually looking forward to the FAS course.... but its still a bit menial to say the least. But it gives me something to get out of the house so its something anyway.

Regarding the volunteer work. Anybody know where a girl early 20's, with zilch qualifications and experience would take me? I looked into the scouts but it seemed to a very "man" place... I dont think Id be comfortable being the only girl around.

Id enjoy volunteering with people my own age, early to mid 20's..... Any thoughts?

Have you any interest in furthering your education? Would probably be of the most long-term benefit in this climate.

    What are you interested in?

Hi Op, firstly thanks for making me laugh out loud at your rant at the Fas course, I can completely understand your frustration and like somebody else already said, it won't be a waste of time, (I doubt very much you are a savage), you could get work experience, make friends but most of all meet people probably as Pee'd off as you are, and therefore realise that what you are feeling is normal.

My friend, a 40 year old female is involved with the cubs and she loves it, she is always going away camping and arranging trips, before this she was a stay at home mother with small kids and this was the perfect outlet for her. She has made loads of new friends, male and female volunteers of all ages. Give it a go and you never know what might happen.

Best of luck with course and future job hunting.

P.S I'm a bit short on work myself these days, so could be ranting myself in a few months :)
