I just finished 1st year. I got 97 percent in summer exams in maths and the lowest I ever got in maths was 94 percent but my teacher put me into pass instead of honours

That's insane, get your parents to ring the school or whatever and sort it out. It's probably a misunderstanding and shouldn't be a big deal at all.

When did you hear you have been 'put into pass'?
Any school that decides about exam levels at the end of 1st year is a disgrace.

In all your other posts you are looking for 'easy' subjects for Leaving - quite unusual thoughts for a first year. Finish your JC first.

Talk to your class teacher/year head when you go back about your levels. Unless your 97% was in very low level papers, they can hardly have decided yet.

I agree with Spurious and Slow Show here, most schools don't split classes into Honours and Pass at the end of first year, especially in maths, I found the maths we did In first year a different world all together than second year, so splitting classes before you try some of the more difficult topics is madness!

Im sure you just misunderstood your teacher, or a mistake of some sort has been made, but if you cant wait until you go back to school to find out whats happening then I would suggest giving your school a call to straighten things out :)

That's ridiculous, you'd be the best in my year :L Get your parents. I failed Irish in first year, my parents rang the school and now going into 3rd year I'm getting high C's. First year is a joke. They shouldn't split them really.

I don't see why they wouldn't be split after 1st year?

If you're going to be doing higher level, you'll need to finish Text and Tests 1 in one year, and do Text and Tests 2 in 3rd year. If you are doing ordinary level, you have two years to finish Text and Tests 1.

First year is way too early to put someone in pass.

Both classes should cover the same syllabus for first and second year and then a decision made (I would suggest) at the earliest Hallowe'en of Third Year. There is a world of difference between students even at the end of first year compared to the beginning of second year, let alone a year later.

If the OP has not misunderstood something, some teacher is effectively deciding on whether a child will do HL LC Maths at the end of 1st year. Crazy.

OP - get your parents in to talk to the Year Head or equivalent person. Make sure they do it next week or it sounds like the teacher will trot out the 'oh it's too late now to change' excuse.

I think it's just a mix-up though. I mean what teacher would put someone in pass at the end of 1st year after they got 97%?

Just talk to your year-head when you go back and they will sort it out for you.

We were split for maths literally on like the first day of school we took a test and then got put into classes but they wernt official pass and honours just 'similar abilities' afaik but still its pretty obvious and I think it was decided by the time we did our test in Christmas, if not then definitely by Summer. Seems early when I think about it now but at the time it seemed the norm:confused: There was a lot of moving between classes though but that was pretty much all moving down really. Then we were split for Irish after the Christmas tests and English at the start of second year even though English really was similar abilities because in one class everyone did higher and in the other it was like 80% but both classes did the honours course:)

In my school, they split up the classes at the start of second year (after first year summer tests) into honours and pass Irish and Maths, they didn't slipt up English until mid-third year and even then there was only about 30 out of 200 doing pass english which is pretty good, in my opinion

My year was split at the beginning of second year into honours and pass for Irish, English and Maths. Probably not a very good idea at all, really just pushes more people towards ordinary level.

If it's not a mistake and they meant to put you in the pass class, do everything you can to get out of it. It should be easy to get into a higher class with such a good level of Maths so far. :) They can't force you to do pass if you don't want to.

Your teacher can't "put" you in pass, you're pefectly entitled to choose what level you do.

    I'd recommend:

Ask her! or complain to the principal.

No need to decide on honours in 1st year! or even 2nd!
I hope its just a mix up!

My maths teacher(who was awful!) in second year told me to move to pass maths, I think only because my brother was a bit of a messer and had dropped earlier that year. I said no, changed teacher and got an A in my JC. The JC doesn't really matter, no decisions on your level should be made until after the JC unless you really struggle.
