What companies in Ireland do mechanical engineers and biomedical engineers do coop at?
What is the work you will be doing like?
How much do you get paid?

    There are many of them.

A lot in my year went to Boston Scientific, Cook Medical and Abbott, however many of them are also working in smaller companies dotted around the country.

Im in a different branch of engineering but in my company I was doing my own projects (the sort of projects that have been put on the long finger by the company but they would ideally like to have them done.) Also helping out with other engineers, doing some of their work. It varies, I use databases and excel a lot, others are using Pro E... It depends on the company.

In most cases you will get paid, I worked for a company that was doing very well and they really looked after us with dinners, nights out etc, it was a good laugh and they paid us well to boot.

    Thats very true aido.

You discover when you do coop that the academic environment of the university is far, far, far removed from reality. Many of the lecturers, the only experience they have in the industry is an internship when they were undergrads.

You will learn far more relevant skills to your future career while you are on coop, depending on the coop of course.

But dont worry, the chances are the company will have had coop students/interns before and know what standard you are. They will give you on the job training and wont expect you to walk in the door and be figuring out forces and moments on structural beams on their most important project of the past decade!

I wouldnt worry, you will be fine. If you are asked to do something that you are not too confident about, always ask your manager for further clarification.

The best skills you will have from college are mediocre computer skills, attention to detail and analytical skills (you probably dont realise you have these) and presentations and report writing.

Thanks for reply ...... so from your experience wud u say boston scientific are nice to wrk for ? I was thinking of applying there , we have to do interviews wen we go bk in sep for placement and wud u say the money is decent enough ? i wud prob have to rent somewhere while im on placement and that wud make it hard to save money for collage.... (I dnt get the grant) ya but engineering is actually very tough in general!!!! collage exams in this area are way more difficult than anything in the leaving cert i think anyway.... was nearly gona drop out in 1st year but ive managed to make it to 3rd year haha.....
