Bearing or pads?

    My sister has an '97 Prelude. It has started to make a high pitched scrawling/ scratching noise in the RHS rear when turning right at lower speeds. You can hear it especially when taking roundabouts.

    She went to a commercial general garage that I use all the time. I find them very good, actually. They said it's the wheel bearing and to replace with a new one is maybe €200+. Being a broke student, she went to a backalley mechanic for a second opinion; he says it's the brake pads.

    I know this mechanic too. Whatever the problem appears to be, it's always something much more innocent and cheap. Personally, I'm not a fan of this approach. I know he means well but I stopped using this guy because you have a beaten track to his premises before you eventually give up, go somewhere else and just get the problem fixed. He'll clean it. Then He'll oil it. Then he'll adjust it. The he swaps it left to right. Every time, you take it away and it appears to be ok for a few days.

    My questions are;

    -would worn brake pads actually make a scratching/ screeching when turning right only?
    -if it is the bearing, would a used one be a good idea?
    -if so, is there a good place these could be got second hand?

    Easy to see if it's the pads anyway :)
    Second hand bearing wouldn't be the done thing really. Jack up the car and if there's no play on it I doubt it's the bearing. If it is the bearing and it's not rumbling at speed and there's no play there's a good bit left in it I'd say.
