Social Welfare, Charity and SOME People not needing it.

I was wondering does anyone have any examples of people they know that get charity vouchers form "well known charities".. that simply don't need it? I was behind someone in a well know supermarket who had one of these vouchers. The woman had a €50 euro voucher, she got her stuff, including alcohol , asked for cigarettes and when the cashier said "that'll be €55, the woman handed her the coupon. The girl then told her she cant accept it cos of the fags and drink, the woman was like ah go on take it, the girl said I cant sorry. So takes id say like €300 or €400 in €50s outta her pocket and pays for the fags, and the girl said "you have €6.34 change " and yer one said " oh right ah keep it and threw it on the counter" I was like WTF? that's just plain wrong.

Both myself and this cashier paying tax to keep this woman and she goes to the charity to get the voucher... goes home with free shopping... fags and a gut load of drink, as I head back to work, she is looking at Jeremy Kyle getting pissed.

    What can be done?

    Was it a foreigner?

No a pure Paddy! lol The "foreigners" do get social welfare only after paying tax... id say they'd be too embarrassed to go to a charity looking for vouchers. My other halfs a "foreigner" - maybe im biased!

I dont mean to be a cynic. But did that really happen op?

totally believe the neck of someone trying to buy fags and booze with a 50 euro coupon. Totally believe them trying to "convince" the shop assistant to just accept it ...

but for such a sponge to say "ah keep the change (6.34) " .. after the cashier wouldnt accept the coupon? ... Most sponges in this case would be like "gimme my change"

Nobody tells shop staff to keep change, it's unheard of

I believe the first part of your story, not the change part

Yes It did happen, believe it or not it's up to you, her words were and I quote "AHHHHHHHHHHHH keep eh " anyway, my point being because this woman got it for nothing she could not give a toss about it, all she had to do was go down the next week and get the same again. Free money. I was more shocked that she had about €400 euro in €50's- more than I had I can tell you, I was temped to go down to the charity and tell them... but of course I did'nt.

Not that it matters to you personally. But I dont believe you. I think this is a "lets moan about people on the social welfare" thread.

But none the less, this thread is also about people getting more than what they are entitled too. (social scamming) which does happen.
But heres the thing about peoples opinions on social welfare scamming... they're all bol*ocks.

You can take a person who would say "the cheek of the these people, i could never do that!" and take them and put them in a situation. They loose their job. Having a hard time to get another. Social money isnt the best. Now ... would they have the same issue of scamming? .. Most wouldnt.

Its still wrong I agree. But what I have witnessed time and time again in life is that something is always 'different' when a person is on the recieving end (positively) of something...

Saw something similar happening today in the post office. A man came in after parking his brand new van with his business name on it outside and gave in a card and said the missus says you are paying out the back to school allowance today. He collected something around €600. He didn't leave a tip. This same family live in a mansion of a house and have parties ever other weekend. Its a great little country we live in.

It is not a thread about social welfare moaning... my father is currently on social welfare.. after 23 years working for the same company... it could be me next. Im saying that it is this sort of mentality or lack of any self caring or dignity that this woman had for herself, she was not embarrased about the money , far from it, she just didnt give a F*ck about the change... it is that simple, that was the most annoying part.

The people who had to go and collect or find the money she was spending, and the people who gave the money for the charity to people who are really in need, it is like 2 fingers to them and the hard work they put into it, aside from the people who REALLY need the money, because of her they have less . This woman does not even know or see that what she does is wrong... she just takes because it is there. Thats the annoying part.

If my donations to St Vincent de Paul are going on cash, booze and cigarettes I'll be thinking twice about donating again

Report them then, if you know the address and you are sure of your facts as you have posted them here, pick up the phone.

    I would.

I was getting on the bus the other day and a black woman just left her buggy at the bus stop, telling the bus driver "it is ok, I will get another 200 euro from the government for a new buggy".

    True story

I worked a till for some years in a town with fairly high unemployment, a lot of dole went on booze and fags.. But I guess some portion of that paid my way through college, so I'll look the other way morally
